Bill Shuman recognized as Volunteer of the Year

Southeastern Med recognized Bill Shuman as the 2021 Volunteer of the Year at the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on April 20.

He began volunteering in late 2019, pre-COVID-19. He continued to volunteer two to three days a week until all volunteers were furloughed in March 2020. He was one of the first volunteers to return in April 2021 and quickly picked up extra hours. Soon he was volunteering in the endoscopy and wound care units four days a week.

The associates of the endoscopy unit nominated Shuman for the award. They praised him for his dedication and for going above and beyond to make each patient comfortable. Shuman consistently runs labs, helps with charts, and transports patients. He also surprises staff members with their favorite chocolates, drinks, and Kennedy’s blueberry donuts.

Shelly Grubb, the unit’s secretary, shared how Shuman makes a point of being at the hospital’s entrance waiting to help many of the patients who come on a recurring basis. They look forward to seeing him and trust him to escort them safely to their appointment.

The center also recognized Gerard Gallagher and Flossie Daniels for reaching 10,000 hours during their years of volunteering. The health center currently has 45 active volunteers who donated 7,300 hours in 2021. Southeastern Med is recruiting new volunteers. Those interested should contact Luellen Deeds at 740-439-8147.
