Bike to Work Day returns to in-person event in Harford County for its 25th year

May 21—The Baltimore Metropolitan Council's Bike to Work Week returned this week for its 25th year, and Bike to Work Day made its first in-person stop since the pandemic began.

The weeklong celebration began Monday and extends through Sunday — with Friday being Bike to Work Day. There were several pit stops across the Baltimore area for registered bikers to pick up a t-shirt, including one on Main Street in Bel Air on Friday morning.

Cindy Mumby, the county's governmental and community relations director, said approximately 40 registered participants had "perfect biking weather" Friday morning during the Harford County pitstop.

"It was wonderful to see everyone back in person after virtual events due to the pandemic," Mumby said. "Bike to Work is a great reminder that commuting by bike and biking for fun are healthy options — good for you, good for the environment."

Mike Kelly, executive director of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, was also glad to have the event back in its full-fledged capacity.

"This is one of the most fun things we do all year," Kelly said. "It's great to have a comeback."

Harford County Executive Barry Glassman's administration is "studying a potential biking connector between Harford Community College and the Town of Bel Air," with more details to come soon, Mumby said.

Bike to Work Week is sponsored by several organizations across the region, including Harford County Public Library and Harford Transit LINK.
