Big sixth inning sends Dakota Wesleyan to its first GPAC softball win

Apr. 11—A seven-run sixth inning allowed Dakota Wesleyan University to earn its first Great Plains Athletic Conference softball win of the season and a doubleheader split with Mount Marty.

The Lancers won the first game 10-4, but the Tigers rebounded with an 11-3 win at McWhirter Field in Game 2 to snap a 10-game losing streak.

DWU (9-15, 1-7 GPAC) tallied four hits in the sixth inning of the second game, sparked by a two-run double by Stephanie Gabel, who went 3-for-4 in the game. Reagan Nebel also added a pair of RBIs, while Adriana Thomason, Alyssa Garcia, Allison McElveny, Monique Gomez and Nora Nelson drove in one run apiece.

In the circle, Kyllie Ramirez allowed three earned runs on nine hits over six innings of work.

Emma Burns went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Mount Marty (15-9, 6-3), while Kaylee Rogers took the loss, allowing three earned runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings.

In Game 1, McElveny trimmed a 6-1 lead to two with a three-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Lancers came back with two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings.

Garcia went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Alyssa Burke took the loss, allowing four earned runs on three hits and six walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Kelly Amezcua went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, while Burns and Adley Swanson each drove in two runs for Mount Marty.

DWU returns to action with a doubleheader against Midland at 3 p.m. Friday at McWhirter Field.
