Big night from Treyaun Webb propels Trinity Christian past Munroe to state semifinals

In an emotionally charged game for both teams, the clock ran out on Munroe’s Cinderella playoff run as they fell to Trinity Christian, 39-22.

Oklahoma commit Treyaun Webb scored three times on 15 carries for 291 yards and iced the game with a long run late in the fourth quarter to give Trinity the win.

While the Bobcats were riding the high of winning the first playoff game in program history against University Christian, the Conquerors were without head coach Verlon Dorminey, who was ill and unable to be at the game.

Here are three takeaways from the contest:

Conquerors Claim Region Title

Welcome to the Treyaun Webb show.

The junior running back ran wild against the Bobcats and helped the Conquerors close out their final home contest with a bang.

Webb took the second play from scrimmage the distance, stomping his way to a 55-yard score and setting the tone for the game. He was the player who the Conquerors turned to when the Bobcats clawed back into the game and he delivered for his team.

No contribution was bigger than his mad dash of more than 90 yards to ice the game late in the fourth quarter. The Conquerors fumbled on the previous play and found themselves in third and a country mile from their own 3.

Webb took a direct snap and barreled into a crowd of Bobcats, shooting out of the other side seconds later and sprinting down the Trinity sideline with defenders in tow. He was hawked down, and the Conquerors received a sideline warning on the play, but they didn’t need points. They needed to find a way keep the drive alive instead of punting from their own end zone. Webb did just that for them.

Trinity’s defense held a team that averaged 32.8 points per game scoreless in the first half of the game. They nullified the Bobcats’ playmakers and imposed their will on the Munroe offense.

For most of the game Trinity stuck Super 11 selection Cam Miller on Wyatt Sullivan and dared the Bobcats to test him with Keaton Thomas shading over from the safety spot as extra insurance.

They plugged holes and clustered around Joshua Brown anytime the senior quarterback thought about breaking away. When Brown attempted to pass, he was swarmed—even resulting in a scoop and score in the second quarter that gave the Conquerors complete control over the game.

The only real offense they generated in the first half came from Ahmari Borden’s kickoff returns, where he seemed to be one missed or broken tackle away from making a trip to the end zone. But Borden never broke free and the Bobcats never got points on the board in the opening half.

They came out fired up in the second half and put together a few impressive drives, but it wasn’t enough to topple the first half lead that the Conquerors built.

Bobcats Beaten, Not Battered

Munroe picked up the first playoff win in school history last week against University Christian. If Friday’s game provided a glance into the future, it won’t take long for them to get another.

The Bobcats trailed 32-0 at halftime on the road against a team with eight state championships and a roster full of Division I athletes. But they didn’t flinch, outscoring the Conquerors 22-7 in the second half and showing heart throughout the game.

They had Trinity on the ropes and had all the momentum on their side out of the half. They marched down the field and Brown scored his first of two touchdowns, then proceeded to lob a jump ball to Sullivan who snagged the two-point conversion over Miller for their first points of the night.

When Trinity got in striking range and Colin Hurley attempted to throw his second touchdown pass of the day to Fred Highsmith, sophomore cornerback Ostin Perkins picked off the pass and returned it 97-yards for a touchdown. And Brown dashed his way to another touchdown to keep hope alive after Trinity scored a touchdown late in the game.

There just weren’t enough ticks on the clock for the Bobcats. As the fourth quarter wore on, it was clear the comeback effort would fall short.

When the clock hit triple zero, the Bobcats season had come to an end and as the realization set in that their high school careers were over emotions began to overcome some of the players.

“I told them I love them,” head coach Alex Lehky said after hugging groups of his players after the game. “Now there are some guys that have to make sure their grades are good so they can get anywhere they’re trying to go for next year. That’s a big goal of our school and our program. Helping guys get to the next level and we have a bunch of seniors that are going to do that this year. My message to them was thank you and I love you. I’ll do anything for you and we’re going to continue to do anything for them and get them ready for signing day.”

The Bobcats finish the season 8-3 but will forever have a place in the history books with their first playoff win last week.

Orlando trip looms for Conquerors

With the win, the Conquerors are headed — almost — to Disney World.

Not for a meeting with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and the gang, but for a showdown with Orlando Christian Prep (10-1) and a trip to the 2A state championship on the line. The Warriors advanced to the semifinals behind a 42-12 win against Zephyrhills Christian Academy.

It won’t be an easy feat for Trinity, but after their last two games they’ve found a groove.

Trinity has outscored their opponents 83-29 in the playoffs. It helps that their schedule put them against tough teams and gave them adversity to battle through.

“Losses are tough but good things come out of losses,” Keaton Thomas said after the game. “I think if we went undefeated, we wouldn’t understand how to bounce back or fight in those tough battles.”

Trinity sits two wins away from the state title. It’ll be a battle to get there, but the Conquerors have been in battles all year long.
