Nebraska football coach Scott Frost was fired Sunday after a home loss to Georgia Southern and in the ensuing replacement chatter, a familiar name to NC State football fans kept popping up.

Dave Doeren was an oft-mentioned candidate to replace Frost, prompting USA TODAY Sports Network reporter David Thompson to ask the Wolfpack coach whether he was interested.

Doeren's response was somewhat noncommital and certainly not the hard no that Pack fans would have preferred.

Doeren has connections to Husker country, spending more than half a decade as a defensive coordinator at Kansas and Wisconsin before earning his first head coaching shot at Northern Illinois. He played college football at Drake, which is located in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Wolfpack has plenty to worry about besides coaching rumors, though, with Texas Tech scheduled to visit Carter-Finley in a game under the revamped stadium lights Saturday
