Big fifth inning allows Mitchell Black to split twin bill with Renner

Jun. 24—Mitchell Black scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure a split in a doubleheader against Renner in teener baseball action Wednesday at Drake Field.

Mitchell mustered one hit in a 3-1 loss to Renner to open the day, but rebounded to win 5-2 in Game 2 to get back to .500 on the season.

The Game 2 rally began with back-to-back singles by Ethan Driscoll and Corbin Kleckler, before an error on a bunt by Landon Soulek scored the go ahead run. Two more errors during the ensuing at-bat padded the lead.

Mason Herman drove in a run, while Tyler Sanderson allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks and struck out nine in five innings on the mound.

Mitchell (11-11) scored its lone run of Game 1 in the first inning on a ground ball by Herman. Renner tied the game in the third on a ground ball by Joseph Neufeld, while a passed ball in the fourth resulted in the game-winning run and Jackson Bjorkman tacked on another run with a ground ball in the fifth.

Conor Mattke had Mitchell's lone hit, while Denzel Kelley allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out four in five innings.
