Big 12, Texas Tech announce 2022 football schedule

The Texas Tech football team will host Texas in its Big 12 conference opener next season and host Oklahoma in the regular-season finale.

The Big 12 and the schools jointly released the 2022 conference schedule Wednesday.

The Red Raiders have seven home games next season, including five of their nine conference games at home. The have an open date in the middle of the schedule, on Oct. 15 after they have played their first six games of the season.

The Tech-Texas conference opener is scheduled for Sept. 24. The October schedule has Tech playing Oct. 1 at Kansas State, Oct. 8 at Oklahoma State, Oct. 22 at home against West Virginia and Oct. 29 at home against Baylor.

The November schedule has Tech playing Nov. 5 at TCU, Nov. 12 at home against Kansas, Nov. 19 at Iowa State and Nov. 26 at home against Oklahoma.

The Red Raiders non-conference games, as previously announced, are Sept. 3 at home against Murray State, Sept. 10 at home against Houston and Sept. 17 at North Carolina State.

Kickoff times and television coverage for the non-conference games will be announced by the conference office in the months leading up to the season. Kickoff times for Big 12 games will continue to be announced 12 days in advance for most games, though the conference and its television partners can set game times on a six-day advance notice a few weeks during the season.

Stadium gift

Texas Tech will announce a football-facilities related gift during a press conference at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the north end zone building of Jones AT&T Stadium, a Tech official said.

University President Lawrence Schovanec, athletics director Kirby Hocutt and new football coach Joey McGuire will be in attendance, according to a Tech athletics announcement.

Tech forms foundation

The Texas Tech athletics department on Wednesday announced the formation of Red Raider Facilities Foundation Inc. The 501c3 is being established to oversee the development of future athletics facilities beginning with the Dustin R. Womble Football Center.

The Tech University System Board of Regents discussed the establishment of the foundation on Oct. 15 at its board retreat. Former Tech regent Chris Huckabee will chair the RRFFI board of directors. Other board members will include Alan Hassenflu and King Scovell.

"I want to thank the members of the board for their work in helping establish this foundation," Tech athletics director Kirby Hocutt said in the announcement. "This is the result of many years of conversations about best practices and the future of facility development and innovation."

Tech senior associate AD Robert Giovannetti said the foundation's board will oversee select, though not all, Tech athletics facilities initiatives. Many such projects previously were under the watch of the Tech office of Facilities Planning & Construction.
