Biden will be the ‘problem solver in chief’ at convention: DNC chairman

Throughout this week’s convention, Democrats have laid out their case to the American people against a second term for President Trump. They’ve pointed to Trump’s character and incompetence, and highlighted planned policy measures on issues like climate change and student debt.

But they still have to stick the landing when former Vice President Joe Biden speaks on Thursday.

“We've had a remarkable week here at the most unconventional of conventions,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez told Yahoo Finance.

Biden will wrap it all together, Perez said: “We have three crises right now” – the coronavirus pandemic, the recession, and civil unrest. “People want a uniter-in-chief, they want a consoler-in-chief, they want a problem-solver-in-chief,” he said, adding, “that's what Joe Biden brings.”

“The common denominator is complete failure of leadership,” said Perez, in what is likely a preview of what Biden will discuss Thursday night. It echoes a message that’s been pushed by Democrats all week from Michelle Obama to Jill Biden to former President Barack Obama.

Biden’s speech will be the last word from the convention before Republicans move to center stage next week.

The Trump campaign – in addition to a defense of their nominee’s record – has also raised the stakes for Biden’s speech by repeatedly calling into question his mental acuity and his independence from the left-wing branches of the party.

During Wednesday’s speeches, Trump sent a tweet calling the former vice president “slow Joe,” and is all but certain to reprise his attacks when he appears on Fox News just an hour before Biden takes the podium.

Perez batted aside any concerns about Biden’s age. Voters are “not concerned about somebody's chronological age, they're concerned about their character,” he said.
