LAKELAND — A 36-year old man died after Polk County Sheriff's officials said he was struck by a van as he was riding a bicycle along First Street NW in the Kathleen area of Lakeland, Sunday.

Investigators are now in search of the vehicle they say fled the scene after the incident that ultimately caused the death of Antonio Adam Smiley

Officials said the crash happened just after 6 p.m. near Stroud Road, when a witness reportedly saw an older model white Ford E350 work van hit Smiley from behind. Smiley was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

The van is also described likely having damage to the right front passenger side area and non-working front headlight.

"The driver of the van knew that a person was struck, and then made no effort

to check on Mr. Smiley," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said. "He or she showed no concern for Mr. Smiley's condition. In fact, the only concern the driver had was to get away as quickly as possible.

"I can promise you, our detectives are going to do everything they can to find that van and the person responsible."
