Bianca Andreescu is off to the US Open semifinals and yes, this is real life, even if the 19-year-old Mississauga, Ont., native can’t believe it.
Andreescu dispatched Elise Mertens 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, to become the first Canadian woman in the US Open semifinals since 1984.
Afterwards, Andreescu was still trying to process the result.
“This is honestly so crazy,” Andreescu said during her post-match interview. “A year ago I was in the qualifying round. I was suffering from a back injury. And now, what I’ve accomplished this year, I’m speechless.
“I need someone to pinch me right now. Is this real life? Is this real life?”
Andreescu struggled out of the gate, losing badly in the first set but she gave herself a short pep talk to rally in the second and third frames.
“Get your s— together,” Andreescu was telling herself.
The 15th-seeded Andreescu will now square off against the 13th-seeded Belinda Bencic in the semifinals, while Serena Williams faces Elina Svitolina.
Andreescu is just one win away from potentially facing off against the greatest player ever for a shot at her first major. This is real life.
