The Beths have a new album on the way. The New Zealand rockers will release their third LP, Expert in a Dying Field, on September 16th, and as a preview, the first single “Silence Is Golden” is out today.
The group began recording Expert in a Dying Field in 2021 at guitarist Jonathan Pearce’s New Zealand studio, until a four-month COVID-19 lockdown stalled the process. Consequently, the four-piece switched to trading notes remotely before they picked up the in-person collaboration while on tour, finally finishing the album during a three-day studio session in Los Angeles.
Despite those stops and starts, “Silence Is Golden” buzzes with energy as frontwoman Elizabeth Stokes begs for silence via, of all things, a fuzzy, guitar-driven tantrum. “I wish that I could freeze time/ Go to the wild/ Soak up the quiet/ Til I’m dripping wet with it,” she spits, over breakneck percussion. “Then I would drive home/ Go to my room/ Wring myself out/ That would be the end of it.”
“The song is about stress and anxiety manifesting as an intolerance to noise,” Stokes explained in a statement. “Where each new sound makes you more and more stressed.” Listen to “Silence Is Golden” below, and scroll onward for the album’s artwork and tracklist.

The Beths’ last album was 2020’s Jump Rope Gazers, though they returned this February with the standalone single “A Real Thing.”
