Inauguration Day is a momentous occasion every four years, as thousands descend on Washington DC to witness a new president get sworn into office.

This year’s proceedings however, already complicated by the Covid-19 pandemic, will be further muted amid ongoing concerns about the prospect of violent protests.

The National Mall will be closed off to the public for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, as federal authorities act to prevent further violence following the 6 January attack on the Capitol Building.

President Donald Trump has already confirmed he will not be attending the inauguration ceremony amid false claims of election fraud.

It is safe to say that Inauguration Day 2021 will be an occasion like no other – but American history is no stranger to strange or unconventional ceremonies.

As the swearing in of the 46th commander-in-chief draws nearer, we take a look at some highlights from Inauguration Days past.
