Best of Cars from Songs: Window Shop with Car and Driver

·2 min read

This week’s Window Shop, the game show where winning is everything, required a detour to the airwaves before taking our car shopping online. The task: Choose a car mentioned in a song and then find that car for sale. In an act of magnanimity, host Tony Quiroga allowed us an unlimited budget to free our imagination and to really allow us to share our bad refined musical taste. The good news is none of us made obvious choices like Little Red Corvette or anything by Jan and Dean or the Beach Boys. A bit of housekeeping: Before recording, our lawyers informed us that we could only use 15 seconds of music before infringing upon the song rights. So, get ready to jam to the best 15 seconds of music that at least mentions a car.

It'd been a while since we had a special guest and somehow we managed to convince Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire to take a break from his podcast, running a YouTube channel, and managing West Side Collector Car Storage, to join us for the best-recorded Zoom call on the internet. Farah's song selection comes from Marc Cohn, and while Cohn is known for his blockbuster hit "Walking in Memphis", Farah is out to prove that we should celebrate his entire catalog and thinks that you will really like his cloyingly sentimental Silver Thunderbird”, if you'd just give it a chance.

Speaking of deep cuts, Car and Driver senior editor Elana Scherr hits us with a lesser-known diddy from the Go-Gos. From there, contributor Jonathon Ramsey puts his three-win streak at stake with a classic song that celebrates the folks who drop their cars as close as possible to the earth. Ramsey's car leaves us drooling until deputy testing director K.C. Colwell hits us with a stock version of the same vehicle—well, nearly the same—that he pairs with a song that has the unmistakable full-bodied flavor of gangster rap.

Finally (this is a long episode), host Tony Quiroga's choice shows that he thinks he can dance and reveals where he gets most of his choreography. As usual, we make obscure pop-culture references, interrupt each other, bicker about cars, laugh maniacally, and go off on enlightening tangents.
