Berti and Anderson return. How Marlins plan to use them. Plus a note on Saturday’s doubleheader

The Miami Marlins’ offense is getting two key players back.

The team on Friday activated both Jon Berti and Brian Anderson from the injured list ahead of its series opener against the Atlanta Braves.

Outfielder Bryan De La Cruz was optioned to Triple A Jacksonville and Billy Hamilton was outrighted to Triple A Jacksonville in corresponding moves.

The moves give the Marlins two veterans back in a lineup that has lately been fueled by younger prospects in JJ Bleday, Peyton Burdick, Charles Leblanc and Lewin Diaz.

It also gives the Marlins versatility with how the lineup is constructed, both in terms of who plays where (Anderson and Berti can play both the infield and outfield) and balancing of youth and experience.

“It spreads out the mixture,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said.

Anderson had been on the injured list since July 24 with a left (non-throwing) shoulder sprain sustained when diving for a groundball in the Marlins’ loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 23.

This was Anderson’s second IL stint of the season, as he also missed a month with lower back spasms. He also missed extensive time last season with left shoulder subluxation on two separate occasions, the second of which required surgery.

The Marlins plan to primarily use Anderson in the outfield —either left or right field — in order to protect the shoulder although he could still see time at third base.

“I’m gonna play wherever they put me in the lineup,” Anderson said. “Just try to be prepared for anything.

Berti, who still leads MLB with 28 stolen bases despite only playing in 58 games, had been on the IL since July 15 with a left groin strain. Mattingly ideally wants Berti playing five days a week. Berti can play second base, shortstop, third base and all three outfield spots.

“Bert’s a guy we like to see,” Mattingly said, “but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to ease him back a little bit [to start]. ... We’ll move him around the field and have him play different spots.”

If you’re going to Saturday’s doubleheader…

The Marlins on Saturday will play the first split doubleheader in the 11-year history of loanDepot park when they face the Braves at 1:10 p.m. and 7:10 p.m.

If you are planning to head to loanDepot park for both games, there are a few logistical topics to note:

▪ Because it is a split doubleheader, you need to have a separate ticket for each game. Separate parking payments will also be required if you are parking in one of the garages around the ballpark.

▪ Fans will have to leave the ballpark after the first game ends, but there will be live entertainment on the West Plaza between games so fans don’t have to fully leave the complex (those who do will need to go through security a second time). Fans with tickets for the second game will be allowed back into the ballpark about an hour before first pitch of the nightcap.

Rehab assignment updates

▪ Left-handed starting pitcher Trevor Rogers will make his second rehab start on Sunday with Double A Pensacola.

▪ Right-handed relief pitcher Cole Sulser is scheduled to pitch two innings for Triple A Jacksonville on Saturday.
