Berks County clarifies confusion over real estate tax bills

Feb. 27—Some owners of tax-exempt properties in Berks County were confused after they received real estate tax bills in the mail.

The county treasurer's office has been receiving many questions about the bills that were sent this week, particularly those for tax-exempt properties, Stephanie M. Weaver, county public relations officer, wrote in an email.

The office hopes to make it clear to property owners that no tax is due and no payment is needed if $0 shows as the amount listed in the "Pay This Amount" line at the bottom of the bill.

Bills were sent to the owners of all properties in the county, including those that are tax exempt, as part of the county's recent transition to a new system.

The process will allow property owners to review and confirm that their data is correct within the new system.

The bills sent for exempt properties indicate that no amount is due for that property. They also show the tax type and millage rate for the area where the property is located.

All property owners are asked to review the data listed on their bill to confirm it is accurate in the new system. If the information is not correct, the property owner should contact the Treasurer's office at treasurer@countyofberks.com or 610-478-6640, ext. 5648.
