Berkmar withdraws from City of Palms out of 'abundance of caution' after players fall ill

The Culligan City of Palms Basketball Classic had its first withdrawal as Berkmar (Ga.) pulled out of its scheduled game on Monday morning.

The team cited several illnesses among the players and made the decision not to take the court the remainder of the tournament, resulting in the cancellation of their planned consolation game against Ballard (Ky.).

"A couple of guys aren't feeling the best in the world," head coach Greg Phillips said.

The decision was made out of an "abundance of caution" for the other Berkmar players and the rest of the teams in the tournament, Phillips said.

"We're obviously very disappointed," he said, adding that health comes first and foremost.

Phillips cited player privacy when asked about details of the players' symptoms and whether they had been tested for COVID-19.

Ballard advances in the consolation bracket and will face Dr. Phillips on Tuesday at 10:40 a.m.
