Berkeley man accused of shooting man on the Garden State Parkway following dispute

A 22-year-old Berkeley man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting a man on the Garden State Parkway following a dispute at a Manchester gas station.

William Sabo also drew three weapons charges and charges for possession of a high-capacity magazine, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.

State troopers were called to Community Medical Center in Toms River Jan. 12 on the report of a shooting victim.

The male victim was hit in the knee by gunfire while he was driving south of the Garden State Parkway around Exit 80, state police said.

State police investigators learned that the victim was involved in a dispute with a man in a black Dodge Charger at a gas station in Manchester shortly before the shooting.

After that dispute, both the vehicle carrying the victim and the Dodge Charger left the gas station in the same direction and got on the Parkway where Sabo shot the victim, state police said.

Another person in the vehicle the victim was in drove him to Community Medical Center.

Working with Manchester police, state police investigators used a description of the suspect from the victim and other information to track down the Dodge Charger, finding that Sabo fired the gun from the passenger side window, state police said.

On Friday, Berkeley police, staff from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and detectives, a K9 unit and the TEAMS unit — a SWAT team — from the New Jersey State Police descended on Sabo's home where he surrendered.

With a search warrant for the home and Sabo's gray Kia Forte, they found a .40-caliber handgun, a .32-caliber revolver, two high-capacity magazines, a few ounces of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, state police said,

Sabo is being held at Ocean County Jail in Toms River. Attorney information for him was not immediately available.
