Work begins on Route 61 traffic signals in Pottsville

Apr. 13—POTTSVILLE — Work has begun on a $2 million project to improve traffic signals on a portion of Route 61, officials with PennDOT Engineering District 5, Allentown, announced Monday.

It involves upgrading existing signal equipment and "optimizing the signal timing systems," as well as resurfacing, drainage improvements, installing curbing, signing and pavement marking upgrades, adding ramps at all intersections to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and "miscellaneous construction," according to officials.

The work will be performed from Mill Creek Avenue to the Mount Carbon arch in the city, Palo Alto and North Manheim Township, officials said.

Motorists can expect weekday lane restrictions and changing traffic patterns on the road in both directions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Officials said additional restrictions will be required during future phases and updates will be provided when available.

Construction on the $2,014,522 project is expected to last until August 2022. Kriger Construction Inc., of Scranton, is the general contractor.

In Pottsville, the work will involve traffic light improvements, resurfacing and adding a left turn signal on Route 61 at East Arch, East Norwegian and Mauch Chunk streets.
