Bears get past Swain County for sixth straight win

Jan. 25—Pisgah High School's varsity girls basketball team extended its win streak to six in a row on Friday night as the Bears knocked off non-conference opponent Swain County 56-29 in Canton.

The game was scheduled on short notice after a game against Brevard set for Thursday night was canceled because of uncertain road conditions.

Despite having just a day to prepare for the Maroon Devils (6-11, 2-3), the Bears' (11-4, 5-1) depth helped fuel a big second quarter that created separation and ultimately led to the victory.

Pisgah's bench depth has been a key factor throughout the season and especially over the current six-game win streak.

All 10 Bears that were available for Friday's game scored points in the contest. In contrast, only five players scored for Swain County.

The teams were tied at seven after the first quarter before the Bears poured in 21 while holding the Maroon Devils to six in the second quarter to take a commanding 28-13 halftime lead.

Pisgah never looked back as seven different Bears scored in the third quarter to help extend the margin.

Sophomore wing Alyssa Smith knocked down two of her three three-pointers in the second quarter and led the Bears with 14 points in the win.

Senior wing Ashtyn Frady contributed eight points while senior wing Emma Deaver, sophomore point guard Dot Mills and junior forward Chloe Burch tallied six apiece.

The Bears will look to ride their momentum into a big time matchup at Franklin on Tuesday that will decide who controls first place in the Mountain Seven.

The Mountaineer will have coverage of Tuesday's varsity basketball games between Pisgah and Franklin online at TheMountaineer.com and in the weekend edition of the paper.
