Bear spotted in Schenectady's Woodlawn neighborhood Tuesday morning

Jun. 15—SCHENECTADY — City police monitored a bear sighted in Schenectady's Woodlawn neighborhood Tuesday morning.

In a release sent out just after 9 a.m. Tuesday, police indicated they have received several reports of a bear traveling in the Woodlawn area and indicated that schools had been notified. Officers had also observed it and worked to ensure it stayed away from main roadways.

Local resident John Grasso reported spotting the bear on State Street, near Garfield Avenue at about 8:30 a.m.

He spotted the bear while at Winsupply on State Street, across the street in front of the Will Power computer repair store.

Grasso recounted that he was "amazed to see a bear in Woodlawn."

Police later followed up to indicate that the bear appeared to have retreated to a wooded area — and posted a quick video of the bear in a driveway captioned "monitoring the bear's morning walk."

"The Schenectady Police Department and the Department of Environmental Conservation continued to monitor the bear sightings this morning, as it traveled through the Woodlawn section of the city, police wrote about noon. "At this time, it appears to have retreated to the wooded area of the Woodlawn Nature Preserve and is no longer on public roadways or private property. We are hopeful that it will continue to move on its way from the city and back into its natural habitat."
