Baxter basketball scores sweep of rival Collins-Maxwell

Dec. 7—MAXWELL — Lilie Vansice put in a career-best 24 points, Emie Tuhn recorded her first varsity double-double and Baxter's girls basketball team used a big fourth quarter to down rival Collins-Maxwell on Friday night.

The Bolts trailed by one at halftime but outscored the Spartans 35-22 in the final two quarters and won the Iowa Star Conference South Division game 52-40.

Vansice has scored 24 points in a varsity game twice in her career and both times it came in wins over Collins-Maxwell. She also had five rebounds and two assists in the latest meeting.

Tuhn registered 13 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks and also was largely responsible for holding Collins-Maxwell's Erica Houge to six points.

Elie Tuhn added eight points, six rebounds and four assists, Mandee Selover chipped in five points and a career-best 12 boards and Ally Padget tallied two points, four rebounds and two steals.

The Bolts (2-0 overall, 2-0 in conference play) shot 40 percent from the floor despite making just 5-of-20 from 3-point range. They were 11-of-19 from the free-throw line, committed 18 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 37-30.

Baxter led by two after three quarters after a 14-11 surplus in the third. The Bolts won the fourth 21-11.

Houge also grabbed 12 rebounds for the Spartans, which dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Chloe Wierson scored 12 points and Alexis Houge chipped in 11 points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Spartans shot 33 percent from the floor, 3-of-19 from 3-point range and 3-of-6 from the line.

BOYS

Baxter 50, Collins-Maxwell 28

A dominating first half was all Baxter's boys basketball team needed against Collins-Maxwell in their conference game on Friday.

The Bolts jumped out to an early lead and never looked back during a 50-28 road win. It was 18-6 after one and 34-11 at halftime.

Baxter is allowing just 28.5 points per game in its first two contests. The Spartans (0-1, 0-1) shot just 18 percent from the floor, hit 4-of-28 from long range and committed 23 turnovers.

Carson Scroggins led the Bolts with 14 points and two steals and Cody Damman registered 10 points, seven rebounds and seven steals.

Treyton Travis tallied nine points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals, Nate McMinamen added seven points, six rebounds and three assists and Trice Clapper recorded six points and five boards.

Rory Heer grabbed four rebounds and had two steals, Cael Shepley put in four points and Perrin Sulzle pulled down two rebounds.

Baxter shot 38 percent from the floor, 3-of-17 from 3-point range and 7-of-11 from the line. The Bolts committed only 11 turnovers.
