Baxter baseball routs Clarksville, edged by Saydel

Jun. 26—CLARKSVILLE — A strong finish pushed Baxter's baseball team to a road win over Clarksville on Wednesday.

The Bolts and Indians were in a tightly-contested game until Baxter plated 10 runs in the final three innings and downed Clarksville 14-5 in an Iowa Star Conference cross-division matchup.

The game was tied at 2-all after one inning and Baxter scored one in the third to bring it back to tied at 4-all.

But a five-run fifth gave the Bolts a lead for good. They added two in the sixth and three in the seventh to win easily.

Baxter (4-13) scored 14 runs on 14 hits. Rory Heer, Ben Richardson, Cody Damman, Jake Travis and Cael Wishman all had two hits to lead the offense.

Heer doubled, scored two runs, was hit by a pitch and stole four bases and Damman doubled, tripled, scored two runs, walked once and stole two bases.

Damman is now batting a team-best .512 and has a team-high 17 runs and 13 walks. Heer leads the team with 19 steals and Damman is second with 14 stolen bases.

Richardson and Travis both scored one run, had one RBI and stole two bases. Wishman doubled twice, scored one run, had two RBIs and walked once.

The other hits came from Cael Shepley, Nate McMinamen, Perrin Sulzle and Kolton Hill.

McMinamen doubled, scored two runs and walked once, Shepley had one RBI and one walk, Hill added one run and one hit by pitch and Sulzle scored two runs.

Cade Robinson and James Esqueda scored one run each as courtesy runners and Robinson stole two bases.

Shepley (3-4) started on the mound and got the win after allowing four runs — three earned — on five hits in six innings. He struck out 10 and walked three.

Sulzle pitched the seventh and allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk.

Clarksville (1-12) scored two runs in the first and second innings and then plated one in the seventh.

Saydel 7, Baxter 5

BAXTER — The Bolts lost a late lead against Class 3A Saydel on Thursday after the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the seventh to win the non-conference road game 7-5.

Both teams plated two runs in the first and one each in the second and third. Baxter took the lead with a single run in the sixth but couldn't hold down the advantage.

The Bolts struck out 15 times at the plate and committed two errors.

Baxter out-hit the Eagles 13-11. Heer and Hill finished with three hits apiece and Shepley and McMinamen each had two hits.

Heer added one run and one steal, Hill scored two runs and McMinamen scored one run and had one RBI.

The other hits came from Damman, Richardson and Wishman, who doubled. Damman added one run, one RBI and one walk. Travis was hit by a pitch and had one RBI.

Damman started on the mound and didn't factor into the decision. He allowed four runs — three earned — on six hits and struck out two, walked one and hit one batter in four innings.

Sulzle (0-3) tossed the final three frames and took the loss. He surrendered three runs — two earned — on four hits and struck out one and walked one.

Jayden Cordova had two triples and two runs to lead Saydel (14-13). Trevor Lause had three RBIs and Payton Rummans walked twice and scored three runs.

Collins-Maxwell 14, Baxter 8

BAXTER — Through six innings, Baxter led rival Collins-Maxwell by a pair of runs during a home Iowa Star Conference South Division game.

But the Spartans rallied with an eight-run seventh frame and downed the Bolts 14-8 on Monday.

The game featured 27 hits and six combined errors.

Baxter, which had 10 hits and two errors, broke the 6-all tie with two runs in the sixth. Baxter fell to 2-7 in conference play.

The two teams matched each other with one run in the first, three in the third and two in the fourth before that.

Heer had three of the team's 10 hits and Damman and Travis each collected two hits.

Heer added two runs and three steals, Damman tallied one run, one RBI and one hit by pitch and Travis doubled and finished with one run and two RBIs.

The other hits came from Richardson, Shepley and Wishman. Richardson doubled, scored two runs, walked once and stole one base and Shepley swiped one bag.

McMinamen was hit by a pitch, Hill walked once and scored one run and Robinson drew one walk.

Damman pitched the first three innings. He allowed four earned runs and six hits, struck out three, walked two and hit two.

Travis tossed the next 3 2/3 innings and took the loss after surrendering 10 runs — eight earned — on 10 hits. He struck out two, walked five and hit one batter.

Sulzle got the final out but not before allowing one hit and one walk.

Caleb Dvorak led Collins-Maxwell (12-8 overall, 8-4 in conference play) with four hits, two runs and four RBIs. Blake Huntrods added three hits, three runs and two steals and Cooper Wierson registered three hits and two RBIs.
