'Batwoman' breaks new ground with first out lesbian superhero lead, and Twitter is here for it

The CW broke new ground Sunday night with the much-anticipated premiere of Batwoman. Openly gay actress Ruby Rose stars as the female caped crusader Batwoman/Kate Kane, TV’s first out lesbian superhero lead. And though some naysayers took to Twitter to air their grievances (Obviously. Its Twitter), the overwhelming majority of fans celebrated the milestone.

Though Kate Kane is now a badass in a bat-suit, through a series of flashbacks, Batwoman showed her unfortunate journey that will be all too familiar to some. In one of those flashbacks, Kate and her presumed girlfriend, Sophie (Meagan Tandy), are caught kissing and must renounce their homosexuality or they will be forced to leave a military academy. Sophie admits to Kate that she lied and told the academy leadership what they wanted to hear because she needs the school and wants to be there. Kate responded, “But they don’t want YOU” “Unfortunately,” Sophie replied, “I don’t have the luxury of being offended by that.”

Batwoman airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on the CW.
