A mass brawl saw five players ejected from a baseball game as all hell broke loose between two rival teams.

Players from the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates came to blows after Reds pitcher Amir Garrett took exception to some verbals from the Pirates’ dugout.

Garrett rushed from the field to seek out his taunter and reigned in punches as he tried to take on the entire bench before Pirates players and staff all swarmed on him.

Cincinnati players weren’t about to leave their player to be attacked however, and converged en masse from the field to pile in on their opponents.

Players seemed to scrap for a full minute before being pulled apart although it was several further minutes until order was fully restored.

One of those involved for the Reds, Yasiel Puig, is actually in the process of being traded so the fight turned out to be his last action as a Cincinnati player.

Garrett was one of five players to be given his marching orders after starting the trouble, claimed his emotions got the better of him.

“I can’t tell you much about what happened, I was angry,” he told reporters afterwards. “Today, it wasn’t about baseball, I was protecting my teammates.”

“I accept any punishment and as a man I have to take that responsibility.

“I apologise for my actions but sometimes in the heat of things, emotions get the best of you”.

This was not the first such incident between the two sides, during a previous meeting in April, both benches stormed the pitch and squared up but no punches were thrown.

In 12 games against each other this year, the Reds and Pirates have totalled 15 ejections.
