BASEBALL/SOFTBALL ROUNDUP: Thompson leads Bowie to series win over Wall

ABILENE – It was familiar territory for Cade Thompson.

Game 3. Win or go home.

And there wasn’t anyone else Bowie coach Tyler Price trusted more on that mound in that situation than one of his senior leaders.

Thompson hurled a gem with Bowie’s season on the line Saturday, pitching six shutout innings in a 12-0 victory against Wall, giving the Jackrabbits the Region I-3A quarterfinal series win. The third game was forced after Bowie dropped Game 2, 6-3.

Bowie advances to play Shallowater in the Region I-3A semifinals next week with time, date and site still to be determined. It’s the first time since 2016 the Rabbits have advanced this deep into the playoffs. The Rabbits are also the last baseball team from the Wichita Falls area standing in the postseason.

“It just so… awesome. I don’t really have the words right now,” Thompson said. “I know we did it, but I can’t believe it at the same time.”

Bowie’s superior pitching depth made the difference Saturday night. The Rabbits used just five pitchers in the series. Wall needed that many in Game 3 alone, including four to get through the sixth inning.

“We’re really blessed with a lot of guys who can get on the mound and deliver quality innings for us,” Bowie coach Tyler Price said. “When it comes down to it, we’ve got eight or nine guys we’d be comfortable putting on the mound.”

But out of all of them, Thompson was the easy choice to start Game 3, even though he struggled in a 21-pitch outing in relief during Game 1. Thompson gave up three earned runs on two hits in a 9-5 win for the Rabbits on Thursday.

That performance didn’t bring doubt to Price’s plan to use Thompson in Game 3. He had seen the senior hurler deliver in a decisive game two weeks ago, when the Rabbits rallied from a Game 1 loss to win a bi-district series against Early. Thompson allowed just one run in a 5-1 win.

“He’s just solid. We trust him to go out there, throw strikes and get people out,” Price said. “He’s not going to let the moment get too big for him.”

Thompson was efficient Saturday, needing just 67 pitches to get through six innings. He allowed just two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

“It was as simple as just going out there and throwing strikes,” Thompson said. “I wasn’t going to try to strike out 13 guys tonight. I wanted to hit my spot and hope they make weak contact. I trusted the guys behind me to make the plays.”

The guys behind Thompson did just that, committing no errors in the win.

Meanwhile, the Bowie lineup got going in the top of the third. Kawlyer Swearingin led off the inning with a double down the right field line, moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on a throwing error. Thompson and Kynan Demoss added RBI singles in the inning with the final run of the rally coming when Carson Sanders scored from third on a groundout by Jacob Fallis.

The Rabbits put the game away in the top of the sixth, scoring eight runs. Devin Melton started the rally with a one-out triple. He scored on a passed ball.

A hit by pitch and consecutive walks loaded the bases. An infield single, solid base hit, walk and hit by pitch later, the Rabbits were up 9-0. Fallis connected on a single into the gap in right center, allowing two runs to score, pushing the lead to 11-0.

Devin Melton capped the same rally he started with sac fly to right field, scoring Demoss for a 12-0 lead.

“The momentum from those rallies is huge. It’s like a humongous weight lifted off your shoulders,” said Thompson, who 1 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs in Game 3. “Especially that last one. Coming back out to the mound after something like that, it’s just a big relief knowing I can take it one pitch at a time and get those last three outs.”

Thompson needed only nine pitches to get the final three outs, striking out the first batter his faced, then forcing a flyout and groundout to end the game. He delivered on the faith his coaches placed in him with the team’s season on the line.

“I know my coaches and my teammates have full faith in me because they’re calling me in for Game 3,” Thompson said. “That just bolsters my confidence. Our mindset never changed after losing the second game. We knew we were still in it, and that we could come back and win the series. That confidence rolled over into my pitching.”

SOFTBALL

IOWA PARK 10, MONAHANS 0

ABILENE – Abby Dowell was dominant in the circle and at the plate Saturday, leading Iowa Park to a 10-0 victory against Monahans for a sweep of a Region I-4A semifinal series. The Lady Hawks advance to the Region I-4A final against Argyle next week in Bowie.

Game 1 of that series is et for 7 p.m. Wednesday, with Game 2 at 7 p.m. Thursday. The third game, if needed, will be played at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Dowell limited Monahans’ chances to put runs on the board, holding them to just two hits in five innings. She struck out eight and walked none.

At the plate, she was a perfect 4 for 4 with two RBIs.

Iowa Park took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer by Rylee Goins. The Lady Hawks added six runs in the fourth, taking advantage of several Monahans errors. The Lady Loboes finished with six errors in the game.

No. 9 hitter Alayna York joined Dowell in going perfect at the plate, finishing 3 for 3 with two runs scored.

“I think we were all business today,” Iowa Park coach Eric Simmons said. “That’s how we try to be. We really try to take this one game at a time and not get ahead of ourselves. These girls are great about focusing on the season that way.

“(Being able to get hits from battlers 1 through 9) has really been a key for us this season. We know that whoever is batting can get a hit and drive in runs. We got great slap hitters at the top of the order who set the stage for us, and it’s all been working for us toward our goals.”

THURSDAY'S RECAPS

SOFTBALL

HOLLIDAY 7, LAMESA 3

ABILENE – Holliday moved a round closer to returning to the state tournament in Austin, completing a sweep of Lamesa with a 7-3 victory in Game 2 of a Region I-3A semifinal series. Holliday (32-2) meets either Coahoma or Bushland in the region final next week. Those two start their semifinal series Friday night.

Holliday never trailed in Game 2 with solo homers by Campbell Jurecek and Addison Lindemann helping the Lady Eagles to a 3-0 lead after three innings. They led 5-0 after four thanks to a two-RBI single by Allie Davis.

But Lamesa made it interesting in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs, including two on two errors in the inning. Holliday got one run back on error in the bottom of the sixth, with Sydney Linn adding a RBI single for a 7-3 lead.

Lindemann allowed no base runners in the bottom of the seventh, striking out the final two batters and securing the win.

Lindemann allowed three runs – one earned – on five hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts. Evelyn Perkins was the top batter, going 3 for 4 with two runs.

BASEBALL

BOWIE 9, WALL 5

ABILENE – Kawlyer Swearingin was called upon to be Bowie’s hero on the mound Thursday. He ended up saving the day at the plate.

After a wild pitch on a third strike that would have ended the game but instead allowed Wall to tie it in the bottom of the seventh, Swearingin led off the eighth inning with a solo home run, sparking Bowie’s extra-inning rally in a 9-5 victory in Game 1 of a Region I-3A quarterfinal series at Hardin-Simmons University. Game 2 is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday back at Hardin-Simmons, with a third game, if needed, occurring 30 minutes after Game 2.

Swearingin was sent to the mound with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and the Rabbits clinging to a 5-4 lead. Wall had already plated three runs in the inning.

Swearingin got Gunnar Dillard to chase a pitch in the dirt for the third strike of what should have been the third out. But the ball got away from Bowie’s catcher, allowing Dillard to reach first and Hutson Teplicek to score the tying run from third.

Swearingin got the next batter to fly out to right, sending the game to extra innings.

After watching strike one to open the top of the eighth, Swearingin didn’t let another pitch go by. He crushed it over the center field wall, putting the Rabbits back on top. RBI singles by Carson Sanders and Kynan Demoss, along with one error, allowed three more runs to score, giving Bowie a 9-5 lead.

Demoss pitched a shutout eighth inning, forcing three pop outs around one single, securing the win for Bowie. Swearingin is credited with the win despite recording one out and facing two batters.

Carson Sanders gave the Rabbits six strong innings to start the game, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and two walks with one strikeout. Sanders was also 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI at the plate. Demoss was 2 for 4 with a double, run and two RBIs.

TROJANS PUSHED TO GAME 3

KRUM – After hanging on for a 7-6 victory in Game 1 of its Region II-2A quarterfinal series, Windthorst couldn’t complete the sweep against Collinsville, falling 10-1 in Game 2 Thursday. The decisive third game of the series is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday back in Krum.

Game 1 was tied 3-3 after four innings, but the Trojans had a four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth for a 7-3 advantage.

Three of those runs were scored with two outs, capped by a two-RBI double by Brayden Berend.

Collinsville answered with three runs in the top of the sixth and had the tying run on second. But Windthorst catcher Zeke Mayo caught a runner stealing third to end the inning and preserve the 7-6 lead.

Collinsville got runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the seventh. Windthorst pitcher Cooper Wolf struck out the final batter, solidifying his complete game win. Of the six runs Wolf allowed, only one was earned, spreading out 12 hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The Trojans equaled Collinsville’s five hits in Game 2 but also walked five batters and hit threw more with pitches. Windthorst scored the game’s first run in the top of the opening inning but couldn’t plate another.

WEDNESDAY'S RECAPS

BASEBALL

IOWA PARK 7, STEPHENVILLE 4

IOWA PARK – Ty Cunningham consistently pitched around trouble Wednesday night, and Iowa Park defeated No. 16 Stephenville, 7-4, in Game 1 of a Region I-4A quarterfinal series. Game 2 is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Stephenville. Game 3, if needed, is 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Justin.

While hit surrendered four runs – three earned – on nine hits and two walks, Cunningham kept Stephenville from putting crooked numbers on the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, he got plenty of run support. The Hawks scored three in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 3-1 lead they never surrendered.

CJ Miser led Iowa Park at the dish, going 4 for 4 with a run and four RBIs. Janson Bernard was 1 for 3 with two runs.

Korvin Lalumia pitched a perfect seventh inning, striking out two to get the save. Lalumia has typically served as the Hawks’ No. 2 starter this season and may still line up that way despite throwing 23 pitches Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

HOLLIDAY 4, LAMESA 2

ABILENE – Holliday received its biggest challenge of the postseason Wednesday but prevailed with a 4-2 victory against Lamesa in Game 1 of a Region I-3A semifinal series. Game 2 is set for 5 p.m. Thursday back at Abilene Christian University.

The Lady Tornadoes tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Laila Vasquez hit a two-out solo home run. It was only the second homer surrendered by Holliday pitcher Addison Lindemann this season and first since March 29.

The Lady Eagles retook the lead quickly with Campbell Jurecek leading off the sixth with a single and eventually scoring on an error. Lindemann provided some insurance to herself with a two-out RBI triple in the top of the seventh, padding Holliday’s lead to 4-2.

Lamesa’s first batter in of the bottom of seventh reached on error, but Lindemann retired the next three, securing the win.

Lindemann allowed two runs, -- one earned – on five hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts. She was 3 for 4 at the plate, driving in two runs. Jurecek and Evelyn Perkins each had two hits with a run scored.
