BASEBALL: Flyers, Big Red remain unbeaten in FC

Apr. 14—OLIVESBURG — The St. Paul baseball game scored three quick runs and led from start to finish in Tuesday's 5-3 Firelands Conference win over host Crestview.

With the win, the Flyers improved to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the FC, which is tied for Plymouth atop the early standings.

"It was nice to escape Crestview with a victory," St. Paul coach Aaron Fries said. "Scotty (Adelman) was outstanding on the mound. His performance was even better than his numbers show."

Adelman went 6 2/3 innings, striking out 11 with two walks. He allowed three unearned runs on five hits.

"In the late innings, we just lost confidence defensively and made Scotty work really hard to get us over the top," Fries said. "Great pitching can cover up a lot of mistakes, and that is what happened tonight."

Adelman singled to lead off the game and scored three pitches later on an RBI single by Luke Blum for a 1-0 lead. With two outs in the top of the second, Drew Kuhnle and Adam Baker hit back-to-back singles, and Adelman followed with a two-run double for a 2-0 lead.

Adelman scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, then Kaden Maxwell scored on an RBI groundout by Jaycob Stanley in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.

The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, and had the tying run at the plate with two outs in the seventh. Fries then summoned Blum to record the final out, which he did on a five-pitch at-bat.

The two teams are scheduled to play again on Wednesday in Norwalk.

"We ran ourselves out of some potential big innings offensively, and defensively we made routine plays look difficult in the sixth and seventh innings," Fries said. "At the end of the day, we achieved our goal while not playing our best, and that is a good thing."
