Before the Carolina Panthers shipped off to Foxboro, Mass. for the week, some i’s needed to be dotted and some t’s needed to be crossed. Among those particulars addressed on Monday was the ongoing quarterback competition between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold—who will both continue to, well, compete against one another in said ongoing quarterback competition.

Following a light day in shells for the Panthers, head coach Matt Rhule told reporters that his top two passers will keep on splitting first-team reps. That approach goes for the next few days up north, where they’ll be meeting up with the New England Patriots for a few joint practices.

Friday’s game will likely see Darnold get the opening crack on offense, seeing as though it was Mayfield’s “turn” this past Saturday against the Washington Commanders. The duo combined to complete six of their 10 throws for 61 yards and a touchdown (Darnold’s) in the 23-21 victory.

As for more pertinent details disclosed by Rhule, a handful of previously absent players were back with the team. That bunch included wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., tight end Stephen Sullivan, offensive lineman Dennis Daley, defensive lineman Derrick Brown and cornerback Keith Taylor Jr.

In addition, DJ Moore—who has been dealing with a sore shoulder and did not play in the preseason opener—remained in a green jersey for the afternoon.
