After bad play at Washington, KC Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes said this to reassure Reid

Just before halftime of the Chiefs’ game at Washington on Sunday, just after Patrick Mahomes threw perhaps the worst interception of his career, the quarterback had a brief conversation with his head coach, Andy Reid.

Strategy? Criticism? What could be said in this downer of a moment?

“He said, ‘We’re going to get it right,’” Reid said. “It really wasn’t that long of a conversation.”

Mahomes’ reassurance proved prophetic. The Chiefs played perhaps their best half of the season after the intermission and cruised to a 31-13 victory to improve to 3-3.

The Chiefs started well Sunday, scoring a touchdown on their first possession following a three-and-out for Washington that was forced by the KC defense. And the Chiefs made it all the way back to the red zone on their second drive, too.

But on the first snap of the second quarter, Tyreek Hill let a ball slip through his gloves for an interception, the first of three turnovers for the Chiefs in the second quarter. This from a team that entered the game leading the NFL with 11 giveaways.

The sloppy play resulted in a 13-10 halftime deficit, but the Chiefs would go on to outscore Washington 21-0 in the second half.

That Mahomes interception, which occurred after he’d fumbled a snap and floated a wounded duck of a pass trying to make a play, was an example of giving too much effort, Reid said.

“He was trying to make something happen,” Reid said. “I’d put it in that category.”

Mahomes finished with a season-high 397 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Injury update

Reid confirmed that tight end Jody Fortson suffered a torn Achilles tendon during Sunday’s win.

Fullback Michael Burton and linebacker Anthony Hitchens were both scheduled to have MRIs sometime Monday, Reid had said on Sunday after the game.
