Baby Yoda's real name actually isn't 'Baby Yoda'

Since Disney released “The Mandalorian” in November 2019, fans have been fascinated with “The Child” — a character that closely resembles an infant version of Yoda — so much that they’ve come to call the creature “Baby Yoda.”

But at the 77th Golden Globe Awards, Jon Favreau, the show’s creator, and Taika Waititi, who voices the nurse droid IG-11, revealed that the miniature Jedi Master has a name — and it’s not “Baby Yoda.”

When New York Times columnist Kyle Buchanan interviewed Waititi, the actor simply responded, “He’s not named Baby Yoda!” Buchanan subsequently tweeted the exchange.

“I also asked Taika about Baby Yoda, since he directed the MANDALORIAN finale,” Buchanan posted. “‘He’s not named Baby Yoda!’ Taika insisted. There is a name yet to be revealed, and Taika knows it but won’t hint. ‘I’ll wait for Favreau to give that away.’”

The tweet prompted hundreds of users to respond.

“It’s Baby Yoda until they give us the real name,” one person tweeted.

“He’ll always be Baby Yoda to me!!” another person wrote.

As for Favreau, the actor and producer echoed the same thoughts as Waititi in an interview with USA Today, while also setting the record straight.

“The series timeline takes place after ‘Return of the Jedi,'” he explained. “And fans of the original trilogy will remember that Yoda not only passes away but actually disappears. So Yoda exists as a Force Ghost.”

Baby Yoda only got his nickname because, as Favreau puts it, “there’s no name for the Yoda species.”

“It’s the easiest, shortest, most hashtagable way to identify that character, which is identified in the episode as ‘The Child,'” he said.
