Baby ‘critically injured’ after crash on I-85 overpass near Durham
Durham police are investigating a Wednesday afternoon crash that left a 9-month-old with critical injuries after being ejected from an SUV.
The crash happened on an Interstate 85 overpass to U.S. 70 after a woman lost control of a 2003 Ford Explorer in a curve and struck a guardrail, the Durham Police Department said in a news release Thursday.
The woman, whose name was not released, was driving the SUV southeast around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when her car “slid sideways, rolled over and struck the left guardrail and concrete barrier before coming to rest in the right lane.”
A 9-month-old child in the back seat was ejected from the Explorer and taken to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.
An 8-month-old child, along with a 3- and 6-year-old, were also in the back seat and were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
No charges have been filed in connection to the crash.
Police said speed appeared to play a role in the crash.
