Avengers: Endgame star Jeremy Renner has demanded that Sony return Spider-Man to Marvel and Stan Lee.
Following the news that Marvel Studios will no longer be producing any Spider-Man films after failing to come to an agreement with Sony, fans have taken to social media to express their outrage.
And the Hawkeye actor himself has now joined in, demanding that the character – who is currently portrayed by Tom Holland – be returned to Marvel and the late comic book creator Stan Lee.
Sharing a picture of himself as Hawkeye in Endgame, Renner wrote: “Hey @sonypictures we want Spider-Man back to @therealstanlee and @marvel please, thank you #congrats #spidermanrocks #please.”
According to Deadline, the two studios were unable to come to an agreement over the future of the franchise after Disney asked for a ‘50/50 co-financing arrangement’, which was refused by Sony.
Instead, Sony reportedly suggested keeping their current deal, in which Disney receives five per cent of first-dollar grossing. However, the House of Mouse turned down the offer.
On Tuesday, Sony said in a statement that it was “disappointed” with Disney’s decision.
The statement read: “Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterised recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise.
“We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.”
“We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own.
Sony finished by adding: “Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”
