The Automotive Detailing Industry Enters the Modern Era. Meet the Family Behind the Technology Movement

KENNETT SQUARE, PA / ACCESSWIRE / January 13, 2022 / "Never underestimate the impact of a good idea when it meets the conviction to make it a reality." Michael Abens, Owner and CEO of Abens Solutions, LLC. should know, the detailing industry marks the third industry he's helped transform with that mindset! Under the brand name UrableTM(you're able), Abens and his two adult children are working to change the image of the automotive detailing industry with big company know-how and small business nimbleness. Urable is a custom made software solution built specifically for businesses offering detailing, ceramic coating, window tinting, vinyl wrapping and paint protection film applications. It helps businesses large and small run smoothly, scale efficiently and create professional customer experiences.

Urable: The Genesis

After retiring from a long and successful career in healthcare, Abens started a consulting company. The money flowed easily but didn't satisfy his desire to give back for all he had been blessed with over his 30 year career. A single family meeting called by his kids changed everything. Kyle, his oldest and Kris, his daughter, had collaborated on a custom CRM for a new sales division at the company Kris worked. They built it on nights and weekends simply because Kris needed a better way to manage the team and all the customer interactions. Kyle is a gifted developer and was working for a global electronics supplier at the time. "We had so much fun working on that project! We both had good jobs and careers in place but something just clicked between us." said Kris. They pitched the idea of starting their own software development company at the meeting. The core idea was to focus on meeting the needs of small, niche-oriented businesses with unique needs not easily met by mainstream business systems. Abens listened and suddenly all the stars aligned. "I love it! Let's focus on detailers." As an automotive enthusiast and frequent race track driver, Abens had been a customer of many detailing businesses. He saw firsthand that there was a lot of room for improvement when it came to business operations and customer experiences. "The services performed were always amazing but the customer experience was lacking badly. If you want to charge professional rates for specialty services, then you'd better provide a professional experience to your customers." With this as the backdrop, Abens agreed to come out of retirement to lead the company. "I'm not a side-hustle kind of guy. If I am going to do something, I do it like I mean it." His first order of business was to have both kids quit their jobs to focus 100% of their efforts on launching a new company from little more than an idea and a recognized need.

This might prove too daunting to some, but for Abens, he'd done it before and knew what it would take. "I follow a simple set of principles when tackling something like this: Listen - Strategize - Execute. I did the same thing when my brother and I created a software system that ended up revolutionizing the delivery of anticoagulation in America. I did it again when I decided to focus on a complex area of medicine that no one thought could be done safely at scale and in a patient's home. That business is now the largest provider of intrathecal drug therapy in the country. Being able to create and launch a business from scratch is amazing. Being able to do it with my kids and mentor them throughout the process is an absolute dream come true."

Launching in a Pandemic

Urable was introduced in Nov 2019 at the industry trade show, SEMA. As we all know, Covid hit hard shortly afterwards and created a difficult and uncertain market condition. In spite of the challenges this presented, the detailing community embraced Urable with open arms and it has been forging ahead ever since. "We hit the bullseye with Urable." said Kyle. "We listened to the market, merged their needs with our collective knowledge and expertise, and built a system that anyone can use to better their business. We're especially proud of the fact that we have been able to design and develop an application that is so flexible and comprehensive that an entrepreneur can literally run their business from their cell phone." The system is evolving continually based on feedback and requests from a very large and active user community around the world.

Going Beyond the Code

Urable has received a lot of positive feedback and has grown leaps and bounds since being introduced but it's the team's work outside the system that is even more impressive. Kris is on the front line every day and early on, customers started sharing stories with her about the impact Urable has made in their business and their lives. They shared very personal and inspirational stories of their entrepreneurial journey too. After hearing so many amazing stories, Kris wanted to find a way to help people inspire others by sharing their story. The Urstory Documentary Series was born! True to his nature, Abens didn't like the often used podcast as the vehicle. Instead, he pulled out all the stops and hired a Brand Ambassador and a full production and film crew to capture the stories in a professional and impactful way. Grant Menard, a detailing business owner and Urable user, was tapped as the Brand Ambassador and the Emmy Award winning team from Cinescope Films was hired as the production and film team. Kris said, "These are the most amazing and inspiring things we do as a family and team. We have forged deep friendships with our customers and hopefully their stories will inspire others that might be struggling." The team has traveled all over the United States and filmed 20 episodes so far with more planned in 2022.

Urable has enabled businesses to hire new employees, move into bigger shops and expand operations geographically. They celebrate when their customers buy their first house, have a baby or buy a new car. Michael, Kris, and Kyle work hard to make the Urable experience special and about more than just the software. They've been enriched by the outpouring of raw emotion that is often shared during Urstory filming and are grateful for the positive impact they are able to create. For Michael, it has never been about the money; it's always been about the impact and making a positive difference in people's lives. "One of the great things about having a family business is that you can bring family values into your business." Michael chooses to invest profits back into the business to fuel projects like the Urstory Documentaries and provide support to various charitable causes. It's refreshing to see one family business helping so many other family businesses and being willing to go to such lengths to inspire others. All the Urstory content can be viewed at Urable.com.
