Auto racing: Border Battle in Superior welcomes back Canadian friends
Jun. 28—SUPERIOR — The sixth annual Great Lakes Border Battle this weekend at Gondik Law Speedway in Superior is back and bigger than ever.
The two-day event features $10,000 to win for Modifieds, a season-high for all of Wissota, according to track promoter Joe Stariha. Racing starts at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, July 1 and 2.
"We haven't had Canadians since 2019, so we're happy to have them back," Stariha said. "We already have many Canadian drivers pre-registered. The $1,000 to start (Saturday's Modified feature) is the highest paying starting money in the 38-year history of Wissota."
Modifieds will run two heats on Friday night and the top 16 in combined passing points will compete Saturday for the grand prize. It will be two separate shows for Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks and Hornets.
The forecast for Friday calls for a high of 78 and for Saturday 73, with a low chance of rain both days. Adult admission is $20 for Friday and $25 for Saturday, $5 each day for those 10-15 and children under 10 are admitted free each day.
Chris Lewis held off fellow Grand Rapids drivers Ken Hron and Paul Schultz to win the Northern Renegades non-winged Sprint Car feature Sunday, June 26, at Halvor Lines Speedway in Proctor, making for a clean sweep after Lewis also captured his heat race.
Shane Sabraski of Rice, Minnesota, did the same thing in Super Stocks while Kyle House of Wrenshall held off cousin A.J. House to earn the sweep in Hornets.
Duluth's Jody Bellefeuille (Modifieds) and Jake Smith of St. Joseph, Minnesota (Midwest Modifieds) were Sunday's other feature winners.
