What Austin-area teams top Fab Five high school football polls after Week 5?

Each Monday, the American-Statesman staff writers rank the Austin area’s high school football teams in Class 6A, Class 5A, and Classes 4A through 1A plus private schools.

Class 6A

1. Westlake, 4-0. Last week: Beat Lake Travis 35-20. This week: at Del Valle.

Chaps trailed at halftime to rivals, but three-time defending champs showed championship mettle while outscoring Cavs 28-10 in second half.

2. Dripping Springs, 4-0. Last week: Beat Bowie 55-7. This week: vs. Johnson.

QB Austin Novosad, talented WRs may get most attention, but defense allowing 8.5 points, 243 yards per game.

3. Round Rock, 4-0. Last week: Bye. vs. Stony Point.

Senior MLB William Brown averaging more than 11 tackles a game as defense has only allowed 180 yards per game, 14 total points over past two games.

4. Vandegrift, 3-1. Last week: Bye. This week: at Manor.

Since falling on last-second field goal to Dripping Springs in opener, Vipers have outscored opponents by average of 39.3 points.

5. Manor, 4-0. Last week: Bye. This week: vs. Vandegrift.

Star RB Quinten Joyner, a USC pledge, averages just 15.5 carries a game but still has 654 yards, 13 TDs rushing.

Class 5A

1. Liberty Hill, 4-1. Last week: Beat Kerrville Tivy 63-6. This week: at Cedar Creek,

Since moving up to Class 5A Division II for the 2020 season, Panthers have yet to lose a district game.

2. Hays, 5-0: Beat Boerne Champion 34-29. This week: Bye.

Behind QB Tyler McInvale’s 151.8 yards passing per game, DI Hawks on pace to throw for most yards per contest since Les Goad took over as coach in 2018.

3. LBJ, 2-2: Last week: Bye. This week: vs. McCallum.

After contest against Northeast was canceled and awarded as a forfeit win, DII Jaguars haven’t played since Sept. 9 against Dallas Parish Episcopal.

4. Glenn, 3-1: Last week: Beat Hendrickson 38-28. This week: vs. Leander.

Career high in carries (28) and yards (261) by sophomore RB D.J. Dugar helped DI Glenn control clock with season-high 63 offensive snaps against Hendrickson.

5. Elgin, 4-1: Last week: Beat Connally 22-0. This week: vs. Belton.

DII Elgin recorded its first shutout since a win over Weiss in 2018.

Class 4A and others

1. Wimberley, 5-0. Last week: Beat Lampasas 38-28. This week: Bye.

Class 4A DII Texans dominated time of possession against Lampasas while rushing for season-high 308 yards on 44 carries.

2. Regents, 4-0: Last week: Beat SA Christian 55-0. This week: vs. Victoria St. Joseph.

TAPPS DII team recorded its second consecutive shutout win.

3. Thorndale, 4-1. Last week: Beat Schulenberg 36-7. This week: vs. Flatonia.

Since allowing 69 cumulative points in first two weeks of season, 2A DI Bulldogs have given up a total of 35 points over past three weeks.

4. Granger, 4-1. Last week: Beat Bruni 35-6. This week: at Iola.

DJ McClelland continued stellar senior season for 2A DII Lions with three TDs against Bruni, including a 73-yard interception return.

5. Hyde Park, 4-0. Last week: Beat TMI Episcopal 35-12. This week. vs. SA St. Anthony.

After two total wins in its previous three seasons, TAPPS DII Panthers off to best start under first-year coach Phil Dawson since 2013 team went 11-2.
