Aurora looking to fill Ward 5 Council seat after death of Councilwoman Kathi Grandillo
This information corrects some details published in the Jan. 26 print edition of the Aurora Advocate.
The recent death of Ward 5 City Council member Kathi Grandillo has created a vacancy on council, resulting in a call for applications and resumes from qualified residents to fill the seat. Applications will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. Feb. 9.
The person selected by Council will serve until Dec. 31, 2023. He or she, along with any other interested residents, could seek election in November 2023 to the remainder of the unexpired term, which will run from Jan. 1, 2024 to Dec. 31, 2025.
The filing deadline for the November 2024 general election will be sometime in August 2024.
Applicants must be a resident of Ward 5 and a registered voter of Portage County for at least one year. They also must continue to reside in Ward 5 for the remainder of the term, and cannot hold any other elected public office nor be employed by the city.
Council meetings take place on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, with the exception of July, August, November, December and when emergency or special circumstances arise.
The Ward 5 representative will serve as an alternate liaison to the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. The new Council rep’s telephone number and address must be available to the general public.
City Council will review qualifications, conduct interviews and select an applicant from the resumes submitted at a special meeting Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. The person appointed then will be sworn into office through Dec. 31, 2023.

Grandillo, 61, died on Jan. 18. She was first appointed to council in December 2012 and was re-elected in 2013 and 2017.
She was active in Aurora Rotary Club, Aurora City Schools Orchestra Boosters and Aurora Relay for Life. She was the first female president of Walden Country Club.
She is survived by her husband, Greg, and sons, Sean and Kyle Grandillo.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
