Augustana baseball's season ends with stunning loss in Super Regional

Augustana’s run at another championship came to a shocking end on Saturday in the Division II Super Regional, as the Vikings blew a five-run lead in the 9th inning, as Southern Arkansas scored seven runs to win 13-11 after trailing 11-6 after eight. The Muleriders swept the best-of-three series with the win.

The Vikings finish the season 47-13-1.

Brett McGee hit a three-run homer in the 9th that served as the deciding blow. Tanner Brown worked the first seven innings for the Vikings, and SAU launched its rally against Evan Furst, who was relieved by Thomas Bruss and then Caleb Saari. Isaiah Haynes then pitched a scoreless ninth after the Muleriders took the lead to earn the save.

Jordan Barth and JT Mix had three hits each for the Vikings, while Carter Howell, Jack Hines and Ben Ihrke had two each. Howell homered twice, giving him 17 on the season, tying Kris Ashland’s single-season school record. Will Olson also homered, his 16th.

Brown had seven strikeouts, giving him 301 for his career, the most in Augustana history.
