The Augustana Vikings gave head coach Tim Huber his 500th career win by winning the Division II Central Region championship Sunday 9-5 over Central Missouri.
That puts the Vikings into the Super Regional round, where they’ll take on Southern Arkansas in a best-of-three series this weekend for a berth in the Division II World Series.
Not surprisingly, Augustana used the long ball to do their damage on Sunday. Trailing 3-1 with two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Luke Ballweg, Drey Dirksen and Carter Howell all hit first-pitch home runs, Howell’s coming with a man on after Max Mosser was hit by pitch. Will Olson also homered, as the Vikings built a 9-3 lead that held up.
Olson was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Mosser scored three runs without a hit, walking twice in addition to getting hit.
Tanner Brown started for the Vikings and earned the win despite allowing five runs in 5.2 innings. Seth Miller worked 3.1 strong innings in relief to earn his fourth save of the year.
Augustana improves to 47-11 with the win. The Vikings are appearing in their fourth straight NCAA tournament, and hoping to earn their first trip to the World Series since they won the national championship in 2018.
