Ask Angelia: Why are county taxpayers seeing a $15 road maintenance fee?

Clarification: A previous version of this story included a sentence that Bob Mihalic noted as incorrect information about the State Supreme Court's recent finding on a road maintenance fee charged to county property owners. The court ruled that the $10 fee increase was invalid.

Question: Why is Greenville County still imposing a Road Maintenance Fee on Personal Property tax bills? I understand that the SC Supreme Court struck down this fee and another one that have been on our tax bills for years. The Road Maintenance Fee is reduced back to the original $15 per year, I thought it was going to go away.”

Answer: Here is the response to that question from Greenville County spokesperson Bob Mihalic:

"The Supreme Court found that Ordinance 4906, which increases the road maintenance fee from $15 to $25 was invalid. Thus, it’s the $10 increase that is invalid — NOT the fee in total. The $15 fee is grandfathered and still valid. So, the Court found the “$10 increase in the road fee… to be invalid.”
