Asante ranked top small health system in nation
Jul. 6—Asante has been named the top small health care system in the nation by Fortune magazine and the data analysis firm Merative.
Asante earned five out of five stars for both clinical outcomes and patient experience, and four out of five stars for efficiency, according to results from the annual rankings.
The world-renowned Mayo Clinic in Minnesota ranked as the top large health care system in the country, while Edward-Elmhurst Health in Illinois took top honors for medium-sized health care systems.
Fortune and Merative ranked the top five health care systems in the small, medium and large categories to create a 15 Top Health Systems list.
With almost 6,000 employees, Asante's operations include Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford, Asante Ashland Community Hospital and Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass.
"This award is incredibly meaningful to our employees and providers, who strive every day to make sure our patients get the care they need with the best possible outcomes," Scott Kelly, Asante president and chief executive officer, said in a press release.
Rogue Regional Medical Center was again named to the annual list of the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation. The Medford hospital has been on the list for 10 years. It was the only Oregon hospital to make the list this year.
Compared to similar hospitals, top-ranked hospitals had better survival rates, fewer patient complications, lower rates of hospital-acquired infections, shorter lengths of stay and lower expenses, according to Merative.
If all hospitals performed at the same high level as those on the 100 Top Hospitals list, the nation would see 104,000 fewer patient deaths, 55,000 fewer patients suffering complications and $12.5 billion less spending on in-patient care, according to Merative.
Top hospitals tended to share common characteristics, including excellent nursing, using data and innovative technology in a practical way, local control and committed leaders, Merative said.
One aim in publishing the data from the rankings is to improve performance in the health care sector, according to Fortune and Merative.
The data used to create the best health care systems and best hospitals lists came from 2020, the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in America.
"Given the unprecedented challenges we faced that year — and knowing that we continued to meet or exceed patient quality and safety standards — speaks volumes to the commitment and dedication of our employees," Dr. Jamie Grebosky, Asante's chief medical officer, said in the release.
