AROUND THE BASES: Copan CV shine early; other teams fall

Twice in two days bad weather has followed the Bartlesville High varsity softball team like a nettlesome penumbra.

Their Monday home game became a weather casualty due to standing water in the outfield. On Tuesday, they traveled to Putnam City North — only to be rained out again.

As a result, they’re still waiting for their debut into a season of promise.

They should finally get a game in the books at this weekend’s tournament in Norman.

The Lady Bruins are slated to play at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday as a precursor to Saturday’s bracket play.

Bartlesville powered to a 19-15 record last season and is focused this year on eclipsing the elusive 20-win barrier.

Following is a roundup of area softball games Tuesday.

Copan

Despite six errors, Copan crumpled Foyil, 14-5, in its campaign debut.

Kamryn Van hurled the complete game victory, allowed only five hits and two walks.

“She made them put it (the ball) in play,” Copan head coach Randy Davis said. “For the most part we played pretty well defensively.”

He credited the high number of errors partly to players in new positions and partly to opening-game jitters.

On the offensive side, Elyzabeth Odum and Faith Weatherspoon each ripped four hits; Weatherspoon walloped three doubles.

Van, Addy Hunter and Kennedy Watson contributed a hit apiece.

Copan learned about the things it needs to work on for the next week before it hosts its home opener on Aug. 16 against Bluejacket.

Dewey

Talent and potential can be more easily replaceable than experience.

That’s the reality facing the Lady Dogger team, which has already matched last year’s regular season loss total.

Adair swept the Lady Doggers, 4-2 and 12-3, in this week’s season openers.

Dewey head coach Niki Keck came into this season needing to replace six starters — including her starting pitcher and starting catcher off last year’s state semifinalist (31-3) team.

“Our inexperience has been showing up as immaturity,” Keck said. “(On Tuesday) we made a lot of mistakes. We didn’t have a lot of grit and they got the best of us.”

Maycee Smith played solid at shortstop and Kyla Overton Katie Wright both hit the ball effectively.

Dewey burst to a 2-0 lead on Monday, helped by Wright with a double. Chanley Herren and Addison Dugger each scored a run.

But, Adair outscored Dewey, 4-0, the rest of the way.

Making her pitching debut for Dewey, Overton scattered six hits and three walks and whiffed seven batters.

On Tuesday, Overton singled twice and drove in two runs, while Wright doubled again. Dugger drove in one run.

Overton went the distance with a 17-hitter and no walks. She K’d one batter.

Caney Valley

Inch-by-inch the Lady Trojans have been progressing the past two weeks.

On Tuesday they broke through into the win column, trimming the Nowata Lady Ironmen, 5-0, in Nowata.

Kensly Foreman clubbed a two-run homer to help power the team to a 1-1 record. M.J. Hines added a double and two RBI’s and Myah Edwards smashed a double.

Mady Willis added a RBI.

Mackenzie McCabe spun the five-hit shutout while overcoming four walks and a hit batsman. She whiffed three batters.
