Arkansas football backup quarterback Malik Hornsby withdraws name from transfer portal

One week after entering the transfer portal, Arkansas football backup quarterback Malik Hornsby has withdrawn his name and will remain with the Razorbacks.

Hornsby had announced his decision to transfer on Jan. 7.

Behind him, there were three quarterbacks: Redshirt junior John Stephen Jones, grandson of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones; redshirt freshman Kade Renfro and freshman Lucas Coley. Jones was honored at senior day, signaling a likely departure, and Renfro tore his ACL just before the Outback Bowl. Arkansas did not sign any quarterbacks in the 2022 early signing period.

Starter KJ Jefferson will be back for 2022, but without Hornsby, the future at the position was murky.

Hornsby appeared in seven games this season, including the Outback Bowl against Penn State, mostly running the ball or handing off. He finished the season with 136 rushing yards to 46 passing yards.

His Outback Bowl performance gave fans a glimpse into what the Razorbacks might have after Jefferson as he showed off his speed. He ran for 67 yards on four carries in the win.

He was a highly touted recruit out of Fort Bend Marshall High School in Missouri City, Texas. The four-star prospect was the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2020 and the No. 14 player in Texas. He chose Arkansas over 23 other offers including Texas A&M, Purdue and North Carolina.
