Corrections & Clarifications: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Rep. Eli Crane's House committee assignments.

New Reps. Juan Ciscomani and Eli Crane have learned their freshmen congressional committee assignments.

Ciscomani, R-Ariz., will serve on the powerful House Appropriations Committee and House Veterans' Affairs Committee. Crane, R-Ariz., was assigned to the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, the House Homeland Security Committee and the House Small Business Committee.

The House Appropriations Committee oversees government spending. The Veterans' Affairs Committee conducts oversight over the Department of Veterans Affairs and writes legislation pertaining to veterans benefits. The Homeland Security Committee works on legislation intended on keeping the country safe from various external and internal threats. The Small Business Committee assists small businesses in areas pertaining to the federal government and has oversight on the Small Business Administration.

Ciscomani in November defeated Democrat Kirsten Engel in Arizona's 6th Congressional District to win a seat left vacant by Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz., who did not seek reelection. He was one of the candidates who now-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., recruited to run. Ciscomani this month nominated McCarthy for the speakership in one of the 15 rounds of voting, the longest speaker vote since before the Civil War.

Crane won Arizona's 2nd Congressional District race against incumbent Rep. Tom O'Halleran, D-Ariz. Like fellow Arizona Republican Rep. Andy Biggs, Crane voted against McCarthy in all 14 rounds until the final vote, ultimately voting "present." The present votes lifted the blockade against McCarthy, allowing him to get control of the gavel.
