Area Scouts help raise money to clean the ocean

Dec. 9—HAVERHILL — Members of the Boy Scouts Spirit of Adventure Council recently participated in unique conversation programs at New England Base Camp in Milton to raise funds for a viral ocean sustainability project called #TeamSeas.

The participants included Jackson Holloran and Aiden Holloran of Groveland's Troop 87 and Aidan Wood, Thomas Skarbek, and Joseph Skarbek of Haverhill's Troop 24.

For every dollar raised by the scouts, one pound of trash will be removed from the ocean via the #TeamSeas project. The goal for the Scouts and the Boy Scouts Spirit of Adventure Council was to raise $1,000 to remove 1,000 pounds of waste from the ocean. The scouts exceeded that goal, scout officials said.

The program incorporated merit badges, NOVA awards, and an organized conservation project.

#TeamSeas is a global campaign created by YouTubers Mark Rober and Jimmy Donaldson, better known as "Mr. Beast," to raise $30 million to remove 30 million pounds of plastic and trash from our oceans, rivers and beaches.

New England Base Camp is a network of outdoor adventure parks open to scouts and families of all kinds to enjoy the outdoors through programs that introduce youth to careers, hobbies, and outdoor pursuits, develop valuable life skills, stimulate learning and build strong character.
