AREA PREP HOOPS: Mustangs ring up 86 points; Record scores 37 for Copan; Copan teams sweep
Following is a roundup of area prep basketball reports from earlier in the week.

Boys: Wesleyan Christian 86, Prue 30
Make that 10 wins in a row — and an area-leading 14 victories — for the WCS Mustangs.
Paced by a pair of 20-point scorers — Kael Siemers, 26, and Kade Kelley, 23 — the Mustangs (14-2) romped to the 56-point home win.
This also was the fifth-straight contest the Mustangs have won by a 22-points-or-more margin.
WCS (14-2) plunged into the battle with swords unsheathed. They scored 37 points in the first half to grab control and spread the playing time out.
“I couldn’t have been more proud of the energy they came out with at the beginning of the game,” said head coach Steven Cooks. “We trapped hard. … We came out flying. … I was so proud of the way we kept up our intensity and energy. We’re a pretty solid group.”
The 86 points scored was a season high for WCS.
WCS eyes three more regular season games — Tuesday, at Foyil; Thursday, at Claremore Christian; and Fe.b 8, host Mingo Valley.

Girls: Copan 50, Bluejacket 22
Bluejacket hardly had a chance to regain its breath after Copan blasted out to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter and 34-10 margin by halftime.
Elizabeth Odum and Kylee Cobb dialed in 12 and 10 points, respectively, to lead the victorious Lady Hornets (8-6), followed by seniors Abbey Davis and Gentry O’Rourke with eight apiece.
“Our defense was pretty good tonight,” Copan head coach Kristy Bryan said. “We had 15 steals. We started off the game in full-court man and then backed the girls off in a 2-3 zone. The girls were working hard — they wanted to win. They came on the court ready to win.”
Bryan also appreciated the pace of the game — only 14 total fouls called and 12 free throw shots between both teams.
“It went by pretty quickly,” she said, noting the last part of the game ended on a running clock. “We played good defense and made good decisions offensively.”
Copan is scheduled to play its Homecoming games, against South Coffeyville, on Saturday evening.

Copan’s Correll Record plugged his offensive game into a high-powered generator to stun Bluejacket with a 37-point night.
Record snapped the nets with four three-pointers, 5-of-8 free throw shooting and 10 two-pointers.
“I played him inside and he was taking it in and laying it up,” noted Copan head coach Kevin Foreman, who saw his team improve to 7-7.
Record also pulled down 11 boards to notch a double-double.
Foreman also praised the contributions of Zack Sharp.
“He did really good,” Foreman said. “He gave us 11 rebounds and seven points.”
Copan controlled the game more than the final margin indicated, Foreman said.
Tyrek Millien and Chandler Bauman added 13 points apiece to round out Copan’s top four scorers.
Copan improved to 5-2 in its last seven games. The Hornets eye five more regular season games, including a home doubleheader today (Saturday) against South Coffeyville.
Next week, Copan travels to Barnsdall and Foyil. The regular season finale is scheduled at home on Feb. 7 against Quapaw.
