Area news in brief for May 18

DAMASCUS BREAKFAST – Damascus United Methodist Church and Middle Sandy Presbyterian Church plan their monthly community breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Damascus church, 300 Valley Road. Donation-only breakfast is all-you-can-eat, with pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, toast, juice and coffee. Proceeds will benefit the upcoming 2022 summer mission trip, June 26-July 2 to work with Jackson Area Ministries in New Lexington, Ohio.

SRMC SALE – Look Nook Gift Shop at Salem Regional Medical Center plans its Goodbye Spring Sale, which will feature 25% to 50% off select items. Sale begins at 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 27, and will run those hours on weekdays through June 3. Some exclusions apply and all sales are final. Proceeds will go to enhancing patient care at SRMC. HISTORICAL SOCIETY – Washington Township Historical Society plans the following events in May. On May 22, members will place flags on graves of veterans in township cemeteries starting at 1:30 p.m. in Maximo. On May 24, the group’s monthly meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the township’s Administration Building, 5789 Beechwood Ave., adjacent to the fire department. Guest speaker will be Richard Haldi, speaking of “Murder in the President’s Family.” On May 29, a Memorial Day service will be held at 2 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial, 5789 Beechwood Ave. Guest speaker will be World War II veteran Ron VanDress, who will recount his experience in the Battle of Okinawa.
