AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Roby walks off field with 8 minutes left vs. WCS
It wasn’t the way Wichita Christian coach Seth Nolan envisioned getting a win Friday night.
The record book will show the Stars moving to 3-1 on the season following a sudden forfeiture by Roby in the fourth quarter of a non-district game played at Boys & Girls Club Field.
But that’s Wichita Christian’s record book. Roby disagrees.
The scoreboard showed Roby leading 74-60 with slightly less than eight minutes remaining in the game when the Lions walked off the field. And despite not finishing the contest, Roby coach Israel DeLeon believes the Lions earned their first win of the season.
Emails to UIL and TAPPS asking for an official ruling had not received a response at the time this story was written.
“In Roby, Texas, we won that game,” DeLeon said. “We don’t care about what goes in the record books. What it comes down to it, with eight minutes left, no one knows how that game is going to end. We were ahead when it ended. We got on the bus, had a good meal and had smiles on our faces. We feel good about how we played.”
Wichita Christian completed a long pass over the middle of the field, moving into Roby territory, when a Lion defender grabbed the receiver and suplexed him hard to the ground. A personal foul was called on the player, whose number doesn’t appear on Roby’s online roster, and he was ejected from the game.
The dismissed player also served as Roby’s quarterback. The Lions were already dealing with some injuries but had more than enough players to finish the game.
However, DeLeon informed WCS coach Seth Nolan that the Lions would not continue playing.
“He told me his game administrator said that it wasn’t safe for them to keep playing,” Nolan said. “I didn’t understand that. They were the ones who had been called for all the personal fouls. We weren’t the ones with the personal fouls. We weren’t the ones making it unsafe. I questioned their motive.”
While someone from Roby posted a 74-60 final score and victory on MaxPreps, Nolan says the head official wrote the game down as a 2-0 forfeit win for the Stars.
Nolan says he asked DeLeon if he was forfeiting the game. DeLeon responded, “We’re leaving.”
“He’s the one who used the word forfeit. I did not use that word,” DeLeon said. “We just felt the game was at a point where it wasn’t about the kids anymore. The officials lost control of the game early, and it wasn’t going to get better.”
There was more than one situation that escalated the issue for DeLeon.
One was an issue with a Wichita Christian fan who was helping run the first-down chains.
“One of my kids committed a blindside block, and he was flagged for it. Those guys on the sticks aren’t supposed to say anything, but that guy automatically started referring to our guy as a dirty player,” DeLeon said. “Then he referred to one of my coaches in a negative way. That was the start of it for me.”
Nolan and his staff addressed the situation and replaced the volunteer on the chain gang.
But DeLeon also felt the Wichita Christian public address announcer was inciting the fans with commentary about the game.
“I had to tell the officials to do something about him, to get him to stop commenting on the game like he was,” DeLeon said. “He was talking on the speaker about officials missing calls. He was saying things that announcers on TV wouldn’t even say. It was inappropriate.”
Nolan disputes this claim.
“The officials never addressed that issue with me or my administration,” Nolan said. “We would have made him stop. I thought he did a great job of controlling the fans and helping to keep them calm.”
But the climax of the drama came on the tackle that led to the ejection. DeLeon agreed with the personal foul penalty but objected to the ejection.
“It was a hard tackle, definitely a 15-yard penalty, but the officials took that game into their hands by ejecting him,” DeLeon said. “I argued that it was his first personal foul and that he should get two. But the official told me that he was in charge, and he would do what he thought was right.
“I told him if he thinks he can dictate this game, then I’m going to dictate this game.”
DeLeon went to his administrator on the sideline and argued his case. The administrator agreed with his assessment that the game was out of control.
“On the list of everything that happened in that ball game, the W and the L are at the very bottom,” DeLeon said. “Think about what it took for us to walk away from that game. We spent all week preparing for it. We drove 2 ½ hours to play in it. We wanted to finish that game, but my main responsibility is to get these players back home to their parents safely. I didn’t feel like we could do that if we finished this game.”
In Wichita Christian’s eyes, it won the game.
“They chose to walk off the field and end it,” Nolan said. “I’m biased, but we had the momentum. I think a neutral observer would feel that way, too, but I guess they feel differently in Roby. I know the white hat jotted it down as a forfeit. That’s what we’re going with.”

BURKBURNETT 41, BOWIE 16
BOWIE – Burkburnett exploded for 28 points in the second quarter Friday night, cruising to a 41-16 road victory over Bowie.
Bulldogs quarterback Hunter McCall was at the center of the fireworks with a pair of short TD runs (3, 13) and touchdown passes of 7 yards to Kade Miller and Kellen Anderson. McCall finished with 198 passing yards and 52 rushing yards.
Colten Swanson and Kyler Kirkland also added rushing touchdowns for the Bulldogs, who now have eclipsed last year’s win total.
Matthew McCarty led the winless Jackrabbits with 83 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Brody Armstrong completed 19 of 31 passes for 148 yards.
Burkburnett (3-1) will try and keep its early-season momentum going next week at home against Vernon, while Bowie hosts Childress.

VERNON – Idalou’s defense kept Vernon from gaining much traction Friday night, handing the Lions their first loss of the season with a 17-0 shutout.
The Wildcats (3-1) scored with 36 seconds left in the first half and put the game away with a 10-point fourth quarter. That was more than enough as Vernon (3-1) only mustered six first downs and 168 total yards.
Quarterback Kale Sherrill led the Lions with 36 rushing yards and 74 passing. Tyrone McKinney caught four balls for 58 yards in the loss.
The Lions will head to Burkburnett next week in a matchup of two of the area’s most improved squads.

CHILDRESS – Holliday scored two unanswered touchdowns in the second half, pulling away from Childress for a 28-14 victory Friday at Fair Park Stadium. The Eagles (4-0) remain undefeated while Childress slips to 1-3.
The game was tied 14-14 when the Eagles finally pulled ahead and held off any late charge from the Bobcats.
Full stats have not been reported for this game.
Holliday now heads into its open week before playing Snyder in two weeks.
BOYD 31, CITY VIEW 14
Boyd scored the final 17 points in Friday’s 31-14 victory against City View, improving the Yellow Jackets record to 3-1. City View falls to 0-3.
The Mustangs got on the board first, scoring their first points of the season on a 72-yard catch and run by junior tailback Jeremiah Durham.
The Mustangs trailed 14-7 after the first quarter, but Ki’Auntre Gresham pulled them even witha 21-yard TD run with 8:47 left in the second quarter.
Boyd added two TDs in the final 5:42 of the first half, taking a 28-14 lead into the locker room. City View was held scoreless in the second half, with Boyd adding a 20-yard field goal by Case Ferguson with 3:48 left in the game.
City View looks to secure its first win next week against Abilene TLCA.

CISCO – After falling behind by 14 points, Cisco scored the game’s next five touchdowns Friday night, handing Jacksboro a 44-28 defeat.
The Tigers led 14-0 early in the second quarter on Baylor Laake’s 13-yard touchdown and Cannon Valenzuela’s 28-yard TD catch. But the Loboes scored three straight times to end first half and built a 35-14 advantage early in the fourth.
Cisco (3-1) finished with 340 yards rushing as Hunter Long led the way with 161 yards and three touchdowns. Jacksboro’s Luke Sams scored on a 54-yard touchdown run and led the Tigers with 84 yards on the ground.
Lando Belcher finished with 131 passing yards and two touchdowns, including an 18-yard strike to Kaleem Howard that pulled the Tigers within 35-28 with 4:51 remaining.
Jacksboro (2-2) will look to bounce back next week when it hosts state-ranked Henrietta.

CHICO – Nocona improved to 4-0 Friday night with a dominant 45-13 road victory over Chico.
Junior Brady McCasland led the charge, completing 16 of 21 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target was Charlie Fuller, who had seven grabs for 94 yards and two scores.
The Indians set the tone early against the winless Dragons, scoring 27 points in the first. Michael Wetmore led the Indians in rushing with 56 yards and also returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.
The Indians will put their undefeated record on the line next week at home against former district foe Valley View.

Rockmore had TD runs of 60 and 68 yards sandwiched around a 68-yard TD run by Camron McComack in the first quarter. The Cubs led 22-0 after the first quarter and 35-0 at halftime.
The Cubs finished with 544 rushing yards on 40 carries.

WINDTHORST – Logan Cope threw for 326 yards, and Windthorst found an offensive groove Friday in a 47-16 victory against Wheeler at Trojan Field. The Trojans (1-2) get their first win of the season, while Wheeler falls to 1-3.
Cope had three TD passes to three different receivers. Clay Hoff caught one of those touchdowns and ran for two more, finishing with 84 yards 15 carries.
The Trojans mustered 524 total yards.

QUANAH – Seymour’s two-headed quarterback tandem of Keegan Gilbreath and Brayden Loyd combined for 294 passing yards in a 32-6 victory against Quanah on Friday at Indian Stadium. The Panthers move to 3-1 while Quanah drops to 1-3.
Gilbreath completed 10 of 13 passes for 126 yards and a TD, while rushing for two more scores. Loyd was 19 of 27 for 168 yards and two TDs.
Seven different Panthers caught a pass with Isaac Willden leading with six receptions for 65 yards. David Charo had six catches for 59 yards and two TDs, and Tabor Wyatt caught five balls for 30 yards and a score.
Seymour opens District 7-2A Division II play next week at home against Munday.

PETROLIA – Petrolia had no answer for Alvord’s big plays in a 38-6 loss Friday at Pirate Stadium. Alvord moves to 2-2, while Petrolia is 0-4.
Jacob Johnson and Daven Alley did most of the damage for the Bulldogs. Alley caught 10 passes for 186 yards and a TD. Johnson rushed for 124 yards and three TDs on 22 carries.
Gage Bowers led the Pirates with 114 rushing yards and a TD on 11 carries. However, the Bulldogs picked off Bowers four times as he completed just 7 of 20 passes for 51 yards.
Petrolia continues to look for its first win next week when it visits rival Electra in a District 7-2A Division II opener.

HERMLEIGH – In a six-man game between two legitimate Division I contenders, it was Rankin edging Knox City for a 50-43 victory on Friday night. Rankin improves to 3-1, while the Greyhounds fall to 2-2.
The Red Devils opened a 36-24 lead at halftime, but Knox City pulled within a score in the third quarter and it was close the entire way. Bryson Callaway threw for 141 yards and four touchdowns, including two to Devin Guillory.
Rankin’s Baret Jackson did most of the damage for the home team, finishing with 247 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Tristin Baxter (95 yards) and Caleb Arrieta (71 yards, 2 TDs) spearheaded the Greyhound running game.
Knox City looks to break its two-game losing streak next week at Crowell.

BENJAMIN – Top-ranked Benjamin snagged another dominant victory Friday night with an 88-0 victory over winless Guthrie.
The Mustangs (4-0) scored 56 points in the first quarter as Grayson Rigdon and Brody White each rushed for two scores and threw a TD pass.
White had a hand in four different types of touchdowns as he also caught a 40-yard score and returned an interception to the end zone. Gus Smith also has an interception return for a touchdown in a game that ended at halftime. The Mustangs host Roby next week.
