DEWEY 63, CANEY VALLEY 53

“They would never go away,” Dewey head coach Lance Knight said about Caney Valley.

Even so, Dewey (8-12) battled to the win to split the season series against the Trojans.

“We had a bad third quarter,” said CV head coach Tug Brinker, after the game had been tied, 25-25, at halftime.

But, Brinker felt the real difference was Dewey’s Jace Williams.

Williams pumped in 16 points while controlling the game inside.

“We couldn’t keep him out of the paint,” said Brinker. He created a lot.”

Colby Miller proved to be Caney Valley’s next biggest headache as he dumped in 25 points for Dewey. Jeremiah Highsmith added nine points, followed by Ryder Muninger with eight, Clayton Evans with four and Zane Griggs and Zaiden Masters with two apiece.

“Defensively, we played well,” Knight said.

Brinker praised the effort on both ends of the court of Zak Wallis and Rocky Hester. Tate Longan hit some big shots early, he added.

But, Brinker came back to the difficult matchup Dewey’s Williams provided.

“We couldn’t get enough shots and we could not get enough stops on them,” he said.

Caney Valley fell to 6-13 after losing its fourth straight.

WCS 81,CLAREMORE CHRISTIAN 37

WCS Mustangs head coach Steven Cooks spread the playing time around after his squad took control early.

Kael Siemers dropped in 20 points, followed by Brady Rucker with 13 and Tyrel Cloud with 10 to lead the Mustangs’ attack.

“Almost everyone scored,” Cooks added.

The Mustangs (15-5) are just two wins shy of four-straight years with at least 17 wins.

Next up, they play host at 6 p.m. Tuesday to Wright Christian. WCS will have payback on its mind following a mid-season loss to Wright Christian.

Later in the week, WCS opens the OSSAA Class B playoffs by traveling to Glencoe in the district round.

NOWATA 41, OKLAHOMA UNION 33

During a good part of the past few seasons, Oklahoma Union had its way against Nowata, although a couple of the rivalry battles morphed into fierce scraps.

But, it’s a different season and the ground has shifted. Oklahoma Union is not the 2020-21 team that won the Class 2A state championship — at least not so far.

And Nowata (16-5) has set the landscape of the Northeast Valley Conference afire. The Ironmen are 12-1 in their last 13 game, including including Friday’s gut-check, nail-chewing scrum against Oklahoma Union (10-11).

Nowata senior Skylar Stevens put a big bite on Oklahoma Union by stuffing the nets with 15 points, followed by Spencer Bullen with eight, Kaleb Bashford with seven and Chelo Prince seven

Yahamario Cole dominated on the boards with 14, to go along with his four points.

Nowata has outlasted Oklahoma Union with seven and eight points.

The win clinched the conference title for Nowata.

Next up, Nowata plays host to Caney Valley.

COPAN 56, FOYIL 30

All things considered — including relying heavily on the freshman class to come in and contribute immediately and adjusting to a new head coach — Copan had plenty about which to smile for its regular season showing.

The Hornets improved to 9-11 with this victory against Foyil (7-14) to gather some momentum for the Class B district playoffs toward the end of next weekend.

“I thought we played probably our best all-around game,” rookie Copan head coach Kolton Stacy said. “I kind of tweaked our matchup zone. I got it running how I want it to be run.”

Stacy began subbing early in this contest.

Shooter Brewington scored 19 points, followed by Teagan Caron with nine and Kane Foreman with seven — three freshmen.

Levi VanSchuyver scored seven. Jarrett Shambles and Gabe Huffman scored five and three, respectively. Huffman’s bucket was a team highlight, Stacy said.

Caron’s production proved welcome due to his recent rehabilitation from injury.

Copan is 3-2 in its last five games.
