Area basketball roundup, scores from Jan. 18: Wessington Springs clips JVC, advances to 281 Conference final

Jan. 19—WOLSEY — Three scored in double figures to lift Wessington Springs to a 48-45 semifinal victory at the boys 281 Conference tournament on Tuesday night.

Wessington Springs (7-4): Mason Schelske had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Blake Larson and Brock Kreuger each scored 10 points. The Spartans face Wolsey-Wessington on Jan. 20 in the 281 Championship at the Huron Arena.

James Valley Christian (3-5): Landon Wager scored 14 points for the Vikings, with Jerred Wallman adding eight points off the bench. James Valley Christian will play for third place in the 281 Conference Tournament on Jan. 20 in Huron.

CORSICA — Shooting 51% from the field, Corsica-Stickney earned its fourth victory in a row with a convincing victory over Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Tuesday in boys basketball action.

Corsica-Stickney (8-2): Tyson Wentland had 32 points and 12 rebounds, while Robert Nichols had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Taven Burke had 12 points for the Jaguars, who outrebounded the Thunder, 44-24 in the win. C-S hosts Ethan on Jan. 20.

Andes Central/Dakota Christian (0-10): Cameron Sybesma had 16 points and Nolan Blackcloud had 11 points for ACDC, which hosts Avon on Jan. 20.

TRIPP — Tripp-Delmont/Armour shot 46 percent from the field in route to winning its fourth game of the season on Tuesday evening.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour (4-3): Mason Reiner had 18 points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Nighthawks. Carson Koehn and Trey Sparks had 12 points a piece while Riley Spaans and Isaac Wunder had six points each. Kase Brouwer added seven points. TDA hosts Mitchell Christian on Jan. 20.

Bon Homme (2-6): Riley Rothschadl led all scorers with 19 points and four rebounds while Nate Hall had 13 points and five rebounds. Landon Bares and Chapin Cooper added nine points each while Carter Uecker had six points and Karsten Kozak had six rebounds. The Cavaliers hosts Parkston on Jan. 20.

ALEXANDRIA — Howard had a 14-point lead at the end of the first half to go on and win a boys high school basketball game against Hanson on Tuesday night.

Howard (6-2): Luke Koepsell and Kolt Koepsell had 13 points each for the Tigers. Howard travels to Bridgewater-Emery on Jan. 20.

Hanson (6-3): Noah Price had 14 points and six rebounds in the loss for the Beavers. Hanson hosts Canistota on Jan. 20.

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon/Plankinton held Redfield to 31% shooting from the field, as a double-double from Reed Rus boosted MVP to a boys basketball victory on Tuesday night.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (6-3): Reed Rus piled up 29 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and three blocks, while Zach Baker added 12 points, five rebounds and two steals for the Titans, who play Dell Rapids St. Mary at the DVC Classic on Jan. 22.

Redfield (3-6): Individual statistics were not reported for the Pheasants, who are at Britton-Hecla on Jan. 20.

MARION — Thalen Schroeder, Connor Epp and Quincy Blue combine for 55 points to lead Freeman Academy/Marion to a victory at home over Canistota on Tuesday.

Freeman Academy/Marion (6-1): Schroeder had a game-high 20 points, along with five rebounds and four assists, while Epp had 19 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Blue had a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Bearcats. FAM hosts Avon on Jan. 22.

Canistota (4-2): Isiah Robertson led the Hawks with 18 pts while Tye Merrill had 13 points. Brandon Kjetland had 12 points and Tage Ortman added 11 points. Canistota travels to Hanson on Jan. 20.

COLOME — Colome maintained a seven-point halftime lead through the second half to notch its second win over Jones County in five days during a boys basketball game on Tuesday night.

Colome (3-7): Joseph Laprath scored a game-high 18 points and swiped four steals, as Caden Munroe posted eight points, 14 rebounds, three assists and one block. Alec Thieman and Brayden Seegers each had six points for the Cowboys, who are away at Gayville-Volin on Jan. 21.

Jones County (0-8): Jett Nix led the Coyotes with 14 points to go with seven rebounds and two blocks, while Cooper Feddersen recorded a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double with four steals and two blocks. Jones County hosts Kadoka Area on Jan. 21.

CORSICA — Corsica-Stickney surged to a 35-16 halftime lead on the way to handing Andes Central/Dakota Christian its second-straight loss on Tuesday night.

Corsica-Stickney (10-2): Avery Broughton's 18 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, four steals and four blocks led the way for the Jaguars, who also got 16 points from Rachel Gerlach and 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and five blocks from Payton DeLange. Morgan Clites finished with eight points, four rebounds and eight steals. Corsica-Stickney hosts Ethan on Jan. 20.

Andes Central/Dakota Christian (8-2): Josie Brouwer was the only Thunder player to reach double figures in points, finishing with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals. Lexie Vander Pol contributed five points and five rebounds for ACDC, which hosts Avon on Jan. 20.

ALEXANDRIA — Hanson kept Howard at bay on Tuesday night in a girls basketball contest, picking up a fourth straight victory.

Hanson (8-3): Annalyse Weber had 12 points and four assists, with Karlie Goergen had 11 points and Erin Dewald had eight points. Alyssa Moschell had six rebounds and Vanessa Doyle added four steals, while Hanson outrebounded Howard, 22-9, in the game. The Beavers host Canistota on Jan. 21.

Howard (6-4): Kate Connor had 12 points and Abby Aslesen had 12 points and four rebounds for the Tigers, who committed 25 turnovers in the loss. Howard is at Bridgewater-Emery on Jan. 20.

MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon/Plankinton cruised to a home victory in a girls basketball contest on Tuesday night.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (7-1): Emilee Fox led the way with 14 points, as Maria Baker notched 12 points and five steals for the Titans, who are away at Kimball/White Lake on Jan. 21.

Redfield (3-6): Ashlyn Clausen, Ellie Evans and Chelsea Smith each scored five points for the Pheasants, who are away at Britton-Hecla on Jan. 20.

WOLSEY — Second-seeded Sanborn Central/Woonsocket used a 35-21 second half to get past sixth-seeded Wessington Springs in a girls 281 Conference tournament semifinal on Tuesday night.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (8-3): Liz Boschee posted a game-high 21 points, while Trista White posted 12 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Blackhawks. SCW will face off with top-seeded Wolsey-Wessington for the 281 Conference tournament title on Jan. 20.

Wessington Springs (4-7): Avery Orth scored 15 points, as Harlee Heim grabbed 10 rebounds. Alyssa Grohs contributed eight points for the Spartans, who will play James Valley Christian for third place in the conference tournament on Jan. 20.

WAGNER — Class A No. 1 Wagner rolled to a 33-6 halftime lead and held out-of-state opponent O'Neill (Neb.) to 11.4% shooting to run away with a girls basketball victory on Tuesday night.

Wagner (10-0): Ashlyn Koupal posted 16 points, seven rebounds and eight blocks, while Emma Yost notched 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Shalayne Nagel put up 11 points, five rebounds, five assists, five steals and five blocks, with Lydia Yost contributing 10 points. The Red Raiders host Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Jan. 25.

O'Neill (Neb.): Kiersten Welke scored 11 points and was the only Eagle to make a field goal in the contest.

CHAMBERLAIN — A 14-4 first quarter for Chamberlain helped lift the Cubs to their fourth consecutive girls basketball victory on Tuesday night.

Chamberlain (6-5): Jayd Chmela had 18 points and Jayda Handel and Kinsey Evans each had 10 points. Mya Knippling added 11 rebounds and five blocks in the win. Chamberlain hosts Miller on Jan. 20.

Gregory (1-8): Cassidy Keiser had a game-high 19 points and Jessy VanDerWerff had 15 points for the Gorillas, who are at White River on Jan. 20.

EMERY — A 21-point first quarter set the table for the Bridgewater-Emery girls basketball team to earn a home win over Kimball/White Lake on Tuesday.

Bridgewater-Emery (8-2): Chloe Schmitt had 19 points for the Huskies, with Morgan Uptagrafft logging 17 points and Casey Meyer scoring 10. Julia Weber and Taylor Schallenkamp each pulled in six rebounds. The Huskies host Howard on Jan. 20.

Kimball/White Lake (2-7): Kate Havlik had 16 points, while Harley Namanny had 14 points and seven rebounds and Ryann Nielsen had 10 points. Dani Deffenbaugh added seven rebounds. KWL hosts Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Jan. 21.

SCOTLAND — Irene-Wakonda scored 27 points in the second half to pull away from Scotland and win its second game of the season on the road Tuesday.

Irene-Wakonda (5-6): Emma Marshall led all scorers with 19 points while Nora O'Malley had 11 points and Katie Knodel had nine points. The Eagles host Alcester-Hudson on Jan. 20.

Scotland (6-6): Delanie VanDriel led the Highlanders with 15 points while Bailey Vitek had 11 points and Martina DeBoer had nine points. Scotland at Alcester-Hudson on Jan. 25.

AVON — Viborg-Hurley used a 36-11 second half to pull away from Avon in a girls basketball matchup on Tuesday night.

Viborg-Hurley (10-2): Coral Mason notched a 22-point, 12-rebound double-double to go with five assists and three steals. Denae Mach scored 11 points and had four assists, one steal and one block for the Cougars, who are away at Baltic on Jan. 21.

Avon (2-7): Tiffany Pelton had eight points, nine rebounds and two steals, and Courtney Sees had seven points and five rebounds for the Pirates, who are away at Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Jan. 20.
