From the Archives: October 5 in the Pioneer
Oct. 5—October 5, 2012 — A 97-year-old church in Hines Township will hold its last service on Sunday. Members of the small congregation at the First Lutheran Church, some who have been attending services for over 70 years, are preparing to worship in the building one final time and describe the feeling like "a death in the family."
October 5, 1997 — Steve Thorson is rather proud of his 357-pound pumpkin, which he says took a lot of care to grow this summer in preparation for the Giant Pumpkin Contest held in Byron, Minn. The competition draws in large and carefully tended pumpkins from across the country.
October 5, 1972 — Basil "Stub" Himes is not a typical custodian, but his spotless work would give no indication that he's actually blind. Himes is the custodian at the Northland Apartments, where he's volunteered his services for years and was finally hired for his work last year thanks to programs that encourage hiring disabled and senior citizens.
October 5, 1922 — A total of 85 posters have been crafted by Bemidji school children highlighting the importance of fire prevention as a part of a contest held by the Civic and Commerce Association. Three prizes will be distributed to different age groups, totaling $10, and all the posters will be displayed downtown for onlookers.
