From the Archives: Aug. 17 in the Pioneer

Aug. 17—August 17, 2012 — A group of around 60 people participated in the Tatanka Chante and Those Loved Ones Who Left Us Memorial Unity Ride, an Indigenous-led activity that took riders and their horses 250 miles from Spirit Lake, N.D., to Red Lake. The ride is meant as an opportunity for healing for those experiencing grief and loss.

August 17, 1997 — A Bemidji man plans to travel to Russia to see, and hopefully paint, a Siberian Tiger in its natural habitat. Scott Fadness, a local artist who has been fascinated by the tiger species since he was a child, has convinced a group of scientists to take him along on their trip to the far reaches of Russia to study the tiger population found there.

August 17, 1972 — Bemidji's Art in the Park had an incredibly successful year, drawing in artists from across the state to show their work. Over 60 exhibits were set up in Library Park, and sales from the event were three times higher than in previous years, earning the artists a total of $3,000.

August 17, 1922 — St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church is set to be consecrated on Aug. 22 by Bishop Morrison of Duluth. This comes after the church met all the necessary requirements, including eliminating its debt. The same day will also see the last sermon of Reverent George Backhurst, who is leaving for another parish after nearly four years in Bemidji.
